What does 1961 hold in store
for camera funs?
It looks like an automatic year.
Besides the many new automatic
cameras, there will be automatic
film and flashbulb vending ma
chines, automatic electric projec
tion screens as well as automat
ic 8mm movie screening by re
mote control.
The vending machine took eight
years to perfect.. Its inventor, Fra
zier James of Nashville, Tenn., is
one of the pioneers in the field
of designing and building vend
ing machines. The idea was born
on a vacation trip when he ran
short of film and couldn't find
a place to buy any.
The result, which I saw demon
strated in New York recently, has
also been introduced in Florida
and Texas. It's a remarkable
machine which dispenses 15 dif
ferent types of films, three types
of flashbulbs and also accepts
film for processing. It takes, in
payment, coins and one dollar
bills up to a total of $5 and
makes change when necessary.
"The machine has an electronic
memory system," James ex
plained, "which scans the mon
ey and rejects it if it isn't genu
ine." We tried to fool the machine by
putting in foreign money and pa
per that resembled dollar bills. It
wouldn't accept them. When genu-1
ine money is accepted, it is count
ed visibly on a totalizer and held
m escrow until a selection of film
or flashbulbs is made. If no sel
ection is made or if the selected
film is depleted, the money is
returned.
"More and more people are on

Jean Lewis, D-Portland. told a
roup of Oregon educators they
should reach agreement among
themselves before presenting any
kindergarten proposal to the
state Legislature.
The educators met here Wed
nesday to discuss the possibility!
of obtaining state funds to sup-
port a kindergarten program in
the state school system.
State Sen. Monroe Sweetland,
D-Milwaukie, said their case
should be well-documented, add
ing: "The needs of this program
must be weighed against other
needs and the case must be pre
sented in Hs best light."
Henry Osibov, OEA research di
rector, was directed to form a
committee for study of this pro
posal. Osibov said any disagreement
about a kindergarten proposal was
on the matter of priority. He said
600 additional classrooms would
be needed for state-wide kinder
garten operation. With so many
demands on available funds, the
question becomes how important
the program is, he said.

It's a four-way, mercury switch box which directs the new
project or to go forward, stand still, reverse or stop de
pending on which side is up.
Hon screen. It comes in three
sizes: 50 x 50, 60 x 60 and 70 x 70
inches in a unit which can be
hung behind a cornice or re
cessed into wall or ceiling. It is
hooked up electrically so that a
flick of the switch automatically
lowers the screen or raises it out

From the projection end, a new
type of automatic control is being
introduced by Bell and Howell.
Their Dual-Lectric 8mm projec
tor takes over automatic opera
tion when the film is inserted in
the threading device. It threads
the film, turns off the room lamp,
positions, each of which controls'
a single activity of the projector
which is seen uppermost. If the
box is turned to another side, the
mercury switch drops and acti
vates another phase of the projector.
Even a child who can't read
Forward, Still, Reverse and Stop
can operate the projector and
imake it perform all its tricks by
remote control. For those who
prefer to stay by the projector,
a single-knob control operates
the machine in its different phases.
