SONOMA, Calif. (UPI)-A man
With a .22 caliber rifle killed
Sonoma man and wounded three
ethers in a wild (hooting ipree
Monday night and then sur
rendered meekly to sheriff's dep
uties. : William Chamberlain, 30, of So
noma was being held by police in
Santa Rosa on suspicion of mur
der. Chamberlain identified him
self as a hypnotherapist with of
fices in nearby San Francisco.
The dead man was Elmer Ghig
gioli of Sonoma. His 6-year-old
daughter, Sandra, was reported
near death with wounds in the
head and back, while his 13-year-old
daughter, Sharon, was in se
rious condition with wounds in the
stomach and arm.
Ghiggioli's stepson, 21-year-old
James Morgan, was shot through
the arm but received only flesh
wound.
; Investigating officer Robert
Hayes said that Chamberlain was
visiting friends who live across
the street from the Ghiggioli home.

victim's home. He already knew
Mrs. Ghiggioli and Sandra since
they had been baby sitters for
Chamberlain s two children.
When Sandra answered the door,
Hayes said Chamberlain tried to
kiss her and invited her out to
his car. She ran into the bedroom,
when her mother, father and sis
ter were sitting. -
Chamberlain walked in right be
hind her. He pulled out the wea
pon, which had been concealed in
Us coat, and began firing with'
eut saying a word. Ghiggioli was
killed outright and the daughters
wounded. Mrs. Ghiggioli bid in a
closet and was not harmed.
; Chamberlain then went out to
reload his weapon, according to
Hayes. i
' Morgan, an airman at Hamil
ton Air Force Base, drove up.
Chamberlain walked over to him
and fired. Morgan turned and fled,
blood dripping from his wounded
arm.
Sheriffs deputies arrived mo
ments later after neighbors bad
reported a family row..
Chamberlain was found sitting
in a tree across the street from
the Ghiggioli home. He had his
gun pointed at unsuspecting sher
iffs officers Ted Ries and William
Weyl, but he tossed it down and
surrendered without a fight.

France Detonates Nuclear Device On Sahara
PARIS (UPI) - France deto
nated a nuclear "device" today
at its proving grounds in the Sa
hara Desert -It was the third suc
cessful test since a determined
President Charles, de Gaulle
made France a member of the
world's "atomic club" 11 months
ago.
The government authorities de
scribed the device as of "small
force," or roughly five times as
powerful as the first atomic bomb
dropped on Japan In August 1945
by the United States.
The device was set off at 7:30
a.m. .(1:30 a.m. EST) at the
French atomic test center at Reg
gane in the desolate Sahara in
southern Algeria.

Noted Newsman Is Dead
CHEYENNE, Wyo. UP1-
Tracy S. McCraken, hustling
newsmen who. built a publishing
empire and dominated the Demo
cratic party in Wyoming tor two
decades, died Monday night less
than a month alter he turned
down an appointment to the U.S.
Senate because he loved his state
and his profession. He was 66.
The handsome, gruff-voiced Mc
Craken was the victim of an in
testinal attack, that struck Christ
mas Day. Three attending physi
cians, who had not completed a
diagnosis, were preparing him for
emergency -surgery when he died
at 10:10 p.m. MST.
He became ill about noon Sun
day and was hospitalized at 10
o'clock that night. He was given
almost continuous transfusions of
blood until hir death. His wife
and two sons were with him at
the end.
McCraken, once referred to by
national magazine as Wyo
ming's "Mr. Big," was Demo
cratic national committeeman for
Wyoming since 1942. His last year
of service to tho paity brought
him two satisfying triumphs he
cast Wyoming's votes at the Dem
ocratic National Convention that
nominated John F. Kennedy for
president and he was offered the
appointment to tlie Senate.
Gov. J. J. Hickey olfcred the
appointment to McCraken after
Republican Senator-elect hcilh
Thomson died of a heart attack
Dec. 9. When McCraken refused.
Hickey announced he would re
sign and accept the appointment
himself from his successor, Dem
ocratic Secretary of State Jack
Gage. '
McCraken said he rejected the
appointment because he wanted
to live in Wyoming and, "I love
newspapering more than any!
