    Sentiment Called Deer Managem
DUNSML'IR THi UtoaM
(tacle in successful dtw
agemenl in Northern CalaVnift i
public sentiment built up after
the antleiless deer hunt in Sis
kiyou County in 1936, said Gor
don Ashcraft of Yrcka, game man
ager of Region 1, California De
partment of Fish and Game.
Ashcraft said in his opinion
that the hunt was a mistake be
cause game laws at that time
were inadequate to control the
number of deer killed in a cer
tain area or to control hunter
concentration.
Legislation included in the
Busch Bill since passed provides
(or unit management on a deer
herd basis and allows controlled
hunting.
Ashcraft maintains the only way
to insure "specimen bucks" for
sportsmen is to manage deer
herds in such a way as to allow
for proper proportion of bucks to
mature on various deer ranges.
