and I have been married four
years and are very happy. He
has three children by a former
marriage and pays a whopping
support bill.

wife can't accuse me of breaking

and I started to go together she
tried to get him to remarry her
but it didn't work. Last year she
gave up and married a mediocre
guy who promptly lost his job.
The ex-wile called Wendell a
few months' ago, and said the
children were getting nervous and
insecure because their stepfather
was unemployed. Could be put the
guy to work? Wendell agreed
and now they're in our hair but
good. They drop over frequently

In the qaest for more knowledge aboat the
workings of life, men have bad to enter worlds
a we normally never see.
One of the most wonderful of man's artificial
extensions to his senses Is the microscope. But
the ordinary optical microscope is limited. It
can only magnify objects about 1,500 times.
The indispensable tool today is the electron
microscope, which magnifies up to some 200,000
times capable of penetrating deep into the
living cell and of revealing the smallest of
organisms, the viruses.
Viruses illustrate the fact that Ills dlffktiK to

and nonliving things. For scientists have acta
alh broken viruses down into their separate
chemical parts, then reassembled them liter
ally manufactured viruses off the shelf.
No microscope, of course, is powerful enoagh
to reveal atoms. In a certain experiment, how.
ever, physicist Dr. E. Muller of Pennsylvania
State University succeeded in obtaining the
amazing Magnification of 24 mOlton. His "field
ion" microscope projected an image of the
actual atomic structure of the tip of a tungsten
wire that was so thin as to be almost invisible.
Biologists are drawing near to an under
standing of the way in which the cell repro
duces itself. Present-day research indicates that
the key is a long, chair.like molecule in the cell
caHed deosyribnucleic acid (DNA for short).
Two Britons, J. D. Watson and F. a C Crick,
have made a "model" of this molecule. It looks
like two interlocking spirals. The spirals are
connected by four nitrogen compounds known
by their initials: A, T, C and G.
It is believed that these four compounds are
the "code letters" of life. A few thousand of
them make up a gene; thousands of genes in
the cell spell out the characteristics of every
organism. Thus these four letters, arranged in
seemingly endless combinations (possibly five
billion in man), determine the shape and be
havior, of everjr thing that lives, ever did live
or ever will live.
To crack this code is one of the greatest
challenges of modern science.

Newbry. whose father was Ore
gon secretary of state, was named
by the Jackson County Court to
day in a unanimous vote.
The Newbry family owns or

Talent area and a packing house
in Ashland which the new senator
has managed for a number of
years.
He has been a member of the
Jackson County Budget Commit
tee and is a member of the county
Board of Equalization.

training at Simpson Bible College
in Seattle and studied voice with
Russell Marshall. He sang tenor
roles in the "Messiah" with the
Renanah Choir.
Pastor Hall was a featured solo
ist at the county teachers' in
stitute this fall. He has also made
many club appearances here.
He is handling the tenor roles
in the 'local presentation of the
"Messiah" for the second straight
year. . ' .
Pastor Hall and his wife, Linda,
live at 1530 Lookout Avenue with
their three sons.
The performance begins at 8:15
p.m. More than 300 voices from
the community, including many
from Klamath' Union High School,
and about 70 musicians forming
the augmented KUHS symphony
orchestra will perform. Director
is M. Dale Hallack, who is in
charge of vocal music in city
schools.
Tickets are available from
KUHS orchestra and chorus mem
bers and they will be available
at the box office.
Hallack suggests that they be
purchased early. Last year's per
formance, the first ever present
ed here, was nearly a sellout.

Association is circulating among
state legislators a study calling
for increased salaries (or judges
in the state, i , .
The study, contained in a book
let, proposed no specific amounts,
but said Oregon judicial salaries
were below those in neighboring
states.
The association said its goal Is
that judges should be on the bench
"only after painstaking and long
schooling; after wide experience
in the practice at the apex of his
energy and ability.
One of the most serious of the
problems involved arises -from the
comparatively low level of salar
ies 'paid to Oregon judges. This
has had the practical effect of
limiting the range of choice in the
selection and retention of judges
for our courts.
In New York, Pennsylvania and
Illinois, state supreme court sal
aries -were $30,000 and mora an
nually. Oregon was far down the
list, with North Carolina, at $16,
000, the bar said.
The salaries of trial court judges
in Oregon mostly circuit court
judges at $13,000 ranks the state
35th among the states In the na
tion and well below California and
Washington.
