WASHINGTON AP) - Soviet
Premier Khrushchev apparently
has won reluctant Red Chinese
support for his plan to try to ar
range a summit conference with
President-elect Joiui F. Kennedy
and other Western leaders some
time next year.
But in striking the bargain he
so apparently has had to agree
to follow a much tougher am1
more belligerent Communist po!
icy line toward the United States
and the other allied powers as
advocated by Red China.
Officials here wonder whether
that may produce new tensions
in East -West relations which
would make a summit meetirg
less desirable from the U. S.
point of view. .
Officials at the State Depart
ment and in. other government
agencies have been studying all
week a new Communist party
statement which was Issued Mon
day near the end of a month
long international Communist con
ference in Moscow.
Their present conclusion is that
on the face of the statement Khru
shchev has succeeded in getting
Communist China's adherence, for
the time being at least, to his
policy of "peaceful coexistence."
The statement recognized that ne
gotiation is a part of the coexist
ence doctrine, but did not em
phasize the point.
The officials also found much
evidence in tho statement that
the Red Chinese had succeeded
in putting across their argument
that if war is not inevitable it is
at least a serious possibility.

52 Forest Fires Put Out
By Forestry
A total of 52 reportable forest!
fires were extinguished by tne
state Forestry Department and co
operating individuals on the Klam
ath Agency state District during
the 1960 season. These fires
burned over a total of 1.710 acres
of srass. brush and timber land.
Only three of the 52 tires
burned in excess of 10 acres; the
other 49 were smaller than 10
acres in size. More than 65 per
cent of the total acreage burned
on the district this year was in
grass, brush and juniper. The re
maining S70 acres burned was in
timberlands.

its weekly report on industry con
ditions that production, shipments
and orders of Western pine were
up" last week compared with the
previous week. , ...
But all three categories were
down compared with the same

started on July 7 and July 28.
Lightning caused the largest
number of fires by starting 16 of
the 52. Of the remaining 36 man-
caused fires, smokers were re
sponsible for 12 and followed by
seven debris burning, seven
caused by campers, three by rail
roads, one logging tire and 16
miscellaneous.
Considering the very long fire
season experienced this year and
the effects of the continued
drought, this small number of
man-caused fires indicates resi
dents of the area are very fire
conscious. :f

few days. Postmaster Chet Lang-
slet expressed his appreciation to
day for the cooperation on his an
nual "Mail Early For Christmas"
campaign.
'While it's too late to talk about
early mailing of Christmas, gifts
and. cards, the postmaster said.
"you can avoid disappointing your
friends and loved ones on Christ
mas Day by using airmail. There
is still time for local deliveries,
but be sure to send all Christ
mas cards by first class mail
and do include your return ad
dress on all Christmas card en
velopes and package labels."

dent Eisenhower has not had a
full-dress, forma) news confer
ence for three months the long
est such interval during his ad
ministration except for the con
valescent period following his
1955 heart attack.
The Chief Executive last con
ducted a wide-open question-and-answer
session in Washington on
Sept. 7-at the start of the political
campaign.
He appeared before newsmen
in Augusta, Ga., on Nov. 16 to
explain his directives to cut down
overseas spending- and halt the
gold outflow. But questions were
limited to that subject and Eisen
hower announced at the outset
that it was not a formal press
conference.
During an October vacation, the
President answered a few ques
tions on .the first tee of the El
dorado Country Club near Palm
Springs, Calif., about a political
appearance in New York City.
But neither the -White House
nor the corps of correspondents
regarded either session as a news
conference. There is no indication
from James C. Hagerty, the Pres
ident's press secretary, when the
next one will be held.
However, Hagerty said in
answer to a question that he was
sure the Chief Executive would
meet reporters before he leaves
office Jan. 20.
In 1955, the Chief Executive
met with newsmen on Aug. 4 and
then headed for a Denver vaca
