River Pact
Readied
For States
SPOKANE (AP) After a
decade of drafting, the Columbia
Interstate Compact Commission is
bout ready to submit its water
resources agreement for approval
of state legislatures.
The proposed compact has al
ready been approved by repre
tentatives of the seven states in
volved and Friday members of
the executive and legal commit
tees will meet in Spokane to plan
its submission to lawmakers.
Commission representatives will
attend from Washington, Oregon,
Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah
and Nevada.
The final revised version of the
compact was approved by state
representatives Oct. 3 and now
must be approved by the legisla
tures and Congress before it be
comes legal and can be put into
operation.
The compact provides for a
permanent body of 16 state com
missioners and one federal repre
sentative to conduct overall Co
lumbia River Basin studies and
make recommendations on power
development, irrigation, naviga
tion, fish, flood control, recreation,
municipal and industrial water use
and pollution control. A plan will
also be made for over-all coordina
tion of water use in the region.

Stock Tumbles
LONDON (AP) - British Ford
shares tumbled by $22.4 million
in the London market today after
reports of Washington intervention
in the plan for the parent motor
car firm in Detroit to take over
' the subsidiary.
Denials from Detroit of such in
tervention restored some confi
dence and more than half the loss
was recovered in late morning
trading.
The conflicting reports shot the
Ford Issues into hectic controver
sy on the exchange, however, and
had an unsettling effect on the
market as a whole.
. Ford stock has been sensitive
ever since the U.S. Ford, which
held 55 per cent of British Ford,
offered to buy up the remainder.
The British Treasury approved
