Pacifists Plan To Ride
Into Path Of Polaris Sub
GROTON, Conn. (UPI) Four
pacifists plan to ride a canoe into
the path of the Polaris missile
firing atomic submarine Ethan
Allen Tuesday when she comes
down the ways during a launch
ing ceremony.
The quartet are members of
the committee for nonviolent ac
tion, which has been holding dem
onstrations since June here and
elsewhere in protest against this
nation's missile program.
The four are Robert Swann, 43,
of nearby Norwich, Joseph Glynn,
28, of Somerville, Mass., William
Henry, 28, of Lodi, Wis., and:
Richard Zink, 20, of Ambler, Pa.
They will conduct what they call
a "civil disobedience" phase of
the project, challenging arrest by
authorities.
The same team was in Charles
ton, S.C. last week when the Pio
neer Polaris ' missile sub George
Washington left fully armed with
16 missiles for a two-year roving
assignment. Henry dived into the
Cooper River In an attempt to
swim into the path of the sub
marine. Besides the canoe, which will
be in the Thames River, site of
the Ethan Allen launching, there
will be at least one other boat on
picket duty. Other members will
carry signs and distribute leaflet:
at the gates of the electric boat
shipyard where the ceremony wil
take place.
"We're focusing attention or
these submarines because tlu
United States is relying on then
for massive retaliation in case o
attack," said CNVA member Ken
neth Meister.
"We believe that massive reta!
iation is not the right way to han
die our problems, ft will wipe ou
civilization. Disarmament is the
answer."
A Navy spokesman said the
civil disobedience participant:
will not be arrested, as in the
past, because it would only bi
giving them more publicity.
Last week, however, the Navy
sent the group a letter warning
that if members attempted to
board a Polaris submarine they
would face a one year jail sen
tence and-or a $15,000 fine. CNVA
followers boarded two such ves
sels briefly last month in an at
tempt to set up a "peace vigil."
The spokesman said that the
"usual precautions will be lak
en Tuesday, as in all submarine
launchings, to insure no one will
be injured. They include Coast
Guard patrol boats, and Marine
and company guards on electric
boat property.
Hoffa Being Investigated

Hoffa, much-investigated head of
the big Teamsters Union, is being
investigated again by both Con
gross and the courts.
Sen. John L. McClellan, D-Ark.,
announced Saturday he expects to
show in a series of hearings open
ing Dec. 13 that notorious under
world criminals and racketeers
continue to control" Teamsters
locals under Uoffa's rule.
Hoffa himself is expected to be
called for testimony at the hear
ings, which will concentrate on
New York City union operations,
some of which were said to be
still under the control of hoodlum
Anthony (Tony Ducks) Corallo. :
McClellan said the hearings will
concern shakedowns, payroll pad
ding and union welfare fund
irregularities.
A federal grand jury at Orlando,
Fla., ended a six-month recess
and was suddenly reconvened
several days ago in an inquiry
Into Hoffa's alleged misuse of
$400,000 of Teamsters' funds in a
Florida real estalo project.
Hoffa acllvcly opposed tiie elec
tion of John F. Kennedy to the
presidency, attacking both the
Massachusetts senator and his
brother, Robert, who served as
chief counsel for another McClel
lan Senate committee which in
vestigated Hoffa vigorously.
There has been a Democratic
charge that the grand jury inquiry
In Florida was suspended by the
Republicans so Hoffa would be
free to campaign against
Kennedy.
Jerome Adlerman, associated
with Robert Kennedy in the ear
lier probe, is counsel for the Sen
ate investigations subcommittee1
that will hold the new set of
hearings.
The reopened court and congres
sional investigations come at a
bad time for Hoffa. His attorneys
have been on the brink of suc
cessfully negotiating a settlement
to wipe out the court monitor sys
tem that has kept Hoffa under
rein for several years.
A hitch developed in these sec
ret settlement talks when a group
of anti-Hoffa plaintiffs in the liti
gation, Teamsters members from
New York, balked at accepting
the settlement proposed by their
attorney, Godfrey Schmidt. They
got themselves a new lawyer.
Joseph S. McCarthy, and he is
insisting on stiffcr settlement
terms.

Magnetic Changes May Be Indicator
WASHINGTON (UPI) Soviet
scientists suggest that brief
changes in the earth's magnetic
field provide "a delicate indica
tor" of atomic explosions above
the atmosphere.
ine nea scientists also say
their ground instruments record
ed magnetic field changes caused
by U.S. nuclear space shots in
1958. However, thev do not claim
that they immediately interpreted
ine recorded changes as indica
tions of atomic explosions.
this was disclosed in a Russian
article on the U.S. Argus and
Johnston Island nuclear experi
ments. A translation was distiib
uted here by the Commerce De
partment.
In the Argus project, three
small atomic bombs were rocket
ed into the sky and exploded
about 300 miles above the South
Atlantic in August and September,
1958. In August of the same year,
two H-bombs were exploded at
lower altitudes, 47 and 27 miles,
above Johnston Island in the
Pacific.
More than 150,000 Americans
visit Denmark each year.
Mary, Queen of Scots, was be
headed In 1587.
According to the Soviet article,
Russian stations in the U.S.S.R.
and Antarctica recorded magnetic
field disturbances attributed to
the atomic experiments.
The Argus shots spread an elec
trical shell over the globe along
the lines of force of the planet's
magnetic field. The lower Johns
ton Island shots, fired aloft by1
Redstone missiles, had a less ex
tensive effect, although they were I
far more powerful. Both produced
auroral displays and brief effects!
on radio communications.
