Sabin was born in Central Cily,
Colorado, November 9, 1871. She
graduated from Smith College in
1893 and from John Hopkins
Medical School in 1900. From 1902
until 1925 every medical stu
dentman or woman had anat
omy as a required subject in the
freshman year and was exposed
to Dr. Sabin s fine teaching. She
was the first woman to receive
a full scholarship at John Hop
kins University. She received ..fif
teen honorary degrees, and num
erous prizes, medals, citations.

woman scientist (she would enjoy
the scientific age of today). Hor
long life was spent in teaching
healing and research. She tried
to find ways of making life
easier and safer for both old
and young. A bronze statue has
been placed in Statuary Hall of

This is a small book filled
with good ideas and recipes for
the homemaker. The recipes are
easy and economical.

The World of James McNeill
Whistler by Horace Gregory.
James Whistler was the artist
to achieve British, as well as
American, celebrity. This story of.
his life is very enlightening. His
was an eccentric personality
and this book is written by an
art critic, and as we -all are fa
miliar with his famous art works
the book is interesting' reading.

fundamental tools without which
further learning is impossible.
However, in the complexity of
modern times, the schools are
called upon to teach fundamental
skills of communication, human
relationships, and understanding,
which go beyond the Three R's.

The Nightingale by Agnes Sligh
Turnbull.
This is a romance written by
the author of "The Golden Jour
ney" and "The Gown of Glory."
Her books arc always popular,
and this one's setting is the early
1900's and laid in the small town
of Ladykiik. The young heroine
owns a wonderful mechanical
nightingale. It is stolen, and the
solution of this mystery is part
of the romantic story.

Dillon. :
Being a chronicle of true sea
adventures from the Port of San
Francisco, this book contains a
baker's dozen of true adventures
of the sen, taken from ships' logs,
manuscripts, newspaper accounts,
and historical records. This is
a good book for a man. In fact,
I found I could hardly put it
down.
Yankee Kingdom by Ralph Nad
ing Hill.
A book about Vermont and New
Hampshire. Stewart Holbrook says
of this book "An authentic and
entertaining account of the most
thoroughly Yankee region of
New England." There arc many
anecdotes, tales of Indian mas
sacres, and the exploits of Ethan
Allen, and many others.
The Seven Ages of Woman by
Elizabeth Parker.
This book seeks to establish a
foundation of fact for the under
standing of the normal ex
periences common to the great
majority of women. It traces wom
an's development physical, psy
chological, and spiritual through
the seven stages of her life.
This is a very fine helpful book
written by a young woman doc
tor. The Father. Inciters to Sons and
Daughters by Evan Jones, edilor.
This book contains letters writ
ten by famous fathers to their
children. An unusually engaging
book, it presents a memorable
portrait of men in what should
lie their finest role.
The Lovely Ambition by Mary
Ellon Chase.
This new novel by Mary Chase
is a completely absorbing family
chronicle. The setting is half in
England, and half in the State of
Maine. Miss Chase knows both
places well. She is the author of
manv books, and writes very, very
well.'
