The days of putting up with
the dangers of stepping on garden
tools, falling from ladders or
mangling your toes in (lie power
mower are over for a few montlis
But new dangers are likely to
arise indoors, especially as you
e.vecule all those plans for things
you're going to build in your
basement workshop. See to it that
you don't execute yourself as
well.
- Grounding Out
K you own electric power tools
make certain that they are prop
erly grounded before using them.
Chances arc the manufacturer has
provided the equipment with a
three. prong plug. Plugging this
into a grounded outlet will ground
the tool. To be grounded the out
let must use BX (metallic) ca
ble, or metal conduit.
If it's impossible to ground in
this manner, run a ground wire
lo tlie cold water pipe. Large
appliances should be grounded
this way too. Loosen a screw
somewhere on the body of the
appliance and fasten the ground J
wire to this.
(Grounding prevents an electric
charge to build up in the tool
or appliance.)
On off switches should be lo
cated so that you can reach them
easily while running the tool. If
the tool lacks one, install a line
switch on the motor cord close to
the tool.
Disconnect
Keep tools disconnected and
switches off when tools are not
in use. I( children are around,
it might be wise to install lock
ing switches. If the tools are on
a separate fuse box pull the
switch.
Use all the guards recommend
ed for the tool. Keep fingers clear
of blades. Examine lumber you
are cutting for nails. Don't wear
loose clothing flapping sleeves,
low-hanging ties. Wear goggles
when using grinding tools
Use the right hand tool for the
right job. A screwdriver isn't a
chisel. Nor is a chisel a screw
driver. Hang It All
Strangely enough, the sharper
the tool the safer it is. A sharp
tool is less likely to slip. Keep
edges sharp by proper storage.
It's better to hang tools than to
throw them into a drawer or box.
And you are less likely to cut
your hand rummaging around in
a drawer that's free of cutting
tools. '
Keep wood handles free of splin
ters. Cracked handles should be
replaced. Don't take a chance oa
tape holding the pieces together.
Keep the entire area safe by
storing inflammable items in stop
pered cans, and preferably out of
the house. Keep the basement
stairs free of debris, overshoes
and packages.
Power tool properly grounded lg the best health Insurance!
you tan have in the workshop. If unit Is not equipped, run
ground wire from convenient screw or bolt to heating or'
plumbing pipe.
