Dear Ann Landers: A very
close friend of mine announced
her engagement to a rather irre

invited to their wedding and sent
a beautiful gift. It was engraved
with her fiance's last initial.
The wedding was called off
when the fellow ran into trouble
with the law. His divorce was
not legal and his wife appeared
on the scene and made a big
stink.
The girl sent back the wedding
gifts but I could not return mine
to the store because of the en

City, County Schools Observing
ucation Week With Parent Visits
City and counly schools nearly
all have .something to offer the
public during National Education
Week that started Monday and
ends Saturday.
They invite parents and friends
to come at any time during the
week to watch youngsters in the
classroom and to tour school facil
ities.
Nearly all schools offer d i s-
plays made by teachers and stu
dents. Some, like Mills School in
the city elementary district, will
offer special evening programs.
There Juvenile Judge Charles
E, Foster, Lakeview, will speak
during an open house program
planned by the school's Parent
Teacher Association at 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 9. He will speak
lbout the problems of youth. Then
parents and friends will be in
vited to visit classrooms.
Some schools will offer special
evening programs during which
parents and those interested will
follow a full day's schedule of
classes in 10-minute periods. They
will have opportunity to meet and
talk with teachers.
Altamont Elementary School's
plans are typical of those in coun
ly school district schools. Parents
and friends are invited to come
to school anytime during the day
all week.
Free coffee will be served al
anytime in the cafeteria during!
the day Wednesday and Thursday.
Youngsters in each room have
constructed special displays in
volving wiiciuie conservation, a
major project they have under
taken this year.
Nearly all schools in the county
unit have reserved one or two!
days for special programs and
activities.
Klamath Union High School's
Parents and Patrons Association
sponsored an open house one eve
ning Inst week. Parents were able
In follow their youngsters' daily
schedule by attending classes of

USDA Estimates Grain
Supplies Will Set Record
WASHINGTON (UPI) - The
Agriculture Department estimat
ed today the total feed grain sup
ply for 1960-61 would total 270
million tons, 3 per cent more than
in 1959-60 and a new record high
for the seventh consecutive year.
The big supply this year result
ed from another generally favor
able growing season, with produc
tion close to record high last year
and record carryover stocks.
The department's publication,
The Feed Grain Situation," said
the number of grain-eating ani
mals on farms in 19li0-61 was ex
pected to be a little below the
1959-60 level. The decline from a
year earlier will be greatest this
fall and winter, as fewer hogs and
poultry will be on farms at that
time. Feeding rates per animal,
however, were expected to contin
ue high and total consumption is
expected to equal the record 1959
60 level.
The department said that even
with continued heavy consumption
of feed grams, the carryover in
to 1961-62 was expected to rise
again probably to around 5 to 10
per cent above the 75 million tons
carried over into 1960-61.
The 1960 growing season turned
out favorably for both feed grains
and forage crops. Feed grain pro
duction was within 1 per cent of
the 1959 record and this year's
hay crop was only 3 per cent be
low the record output in 1958.
Feed production this year was
ample for livestock on farms in
most areas of the country, al
though drought reduced output of
both feed grains and forages in
more than 6 billion bushels, 166
million more than last year and
1.5 billion above the 1954-58 av
erage. The I960 crop of 4.3 bil
lion bushels was only 2 per cent
below the 193U record harvest.
This big outturn probably will

mean a carryover of about 2 bil
lion bushels on Oct. 1, 1961.
The department said feed grain
prices were slightly lower this
fall than a year ago and prob
ably would average a little lower
for the entire 1960-61 feeding year. ,
Another big crop, a slight reduc-l
tion in livestock on farms, and
the lower support for 1960 corn I
are major factors affecting prices. I
The department has predicted
the gross income to farmers in
1961 from poultry and egg produc
tion will be 3 to 4 per cent below
the $3.3 billion expected for 19(10.
The Japenese ministry of trade
has allocated $3.4 million for the
purchase of imported meats dur
ing the October-March period. The
imports were expected to include
2,700 tons of beef, 1,800 tons of
pork, and 500 tons of fat back.
The " fat back was expected to
come from the United States. The
pork also may be obtained from
the United States it prices are
competitive with Taiwan and oth
er countries.
Japan also contemplated pur
chasing more than $300,000 worth
of breeding livestock bulls, milk
cows, horses, hogs, and sheep.
Possible sources would be the
United States, Australia, the Unit
ed Kingdom, the Netherlands,
Denmark, and possibly South
Korea.
