Thrills
Actress
By I.OIA FISHER
Wriltrn For I'PI
MOSCOW (LPI The opening
of "My Fair Lady" in Moscow
certainly was one of lhe mosl
thrilling of my career.
The cast was a little nervous;
alter the reserved reception the
diplomatic corps gave to a .spe
cial performance the night be
fore. !
But when the, final curtain rang
down opening nipht the Russian
audience rushed to me oirne.stra
pit applauding, shouting "hravo"
and demanding more curtain
calls.
We applauded back in the Rus
sian tradition and then went'
backstage for a champagne party
with the Russian crew who
worked very hard alongside our
American stage hands.
Robert Coo'es, who plays Col.
Pickering, led a series of toasts
with the first strains of "For He's
A Jolly Good Fellow" and "Hip-hip-hurrahs."
Afterward, the cast wenl back
to the Ukraine' Hotel for another
celebration given by the Russian
theatrical officials.
I was .served caviar, smoked
salmon, chicken and ice cream
and drank ltd proof .vodka.
When the officials of "Coscnn
cert" the Soviet organir.nl ion
sponsoring the show made laud
atory speeches, it really touched,
the cast.
