ly ballistic missile Polaris sulv
marines was dedicated here to
day. Missiles will he assembled,
checked out. stored or loaded
aboard the fleet ballistic subma
rines at the new facility. It is
built on an 800-acre reservation
even miles up the Cooper Hiver
from Charleston harbor.
Rep. Mrndel Rivers 'D-SCi said
in a speech prepared lor the dedi
cation that "this base will only
necome completely successlul in

for its ultimate purpose."
Rivers, member of the House
Armed Services Committee, said
"like the fire extinguisher, in our
home, like a doctor on emergency

ohtain, we hope we will never see
this base put to its wartime use."
The Uelense Department has
declined to say whether the hv-
drogen warheads ol the Polaris
missiles will be stored here.
Nineteen officers and 2IKI en
listed men, plus about KM) enai
neers who will act as technical
advisers, will stalf the assembly
plant. Cmdr. Harry C. Cox. a
specialist in naval ordnance and
a native of Hemingway, S C., will
be in command
The Polaris missile, to be fired
from submersed nuclear suhma
lines, will have an initial opera
tions range ol about 1 ,3:10 statute
miles. The missiles have been
fired more than 900 miles in tests.
The nuclear - powered Geoi sic
Washington was commissioned
last December and now is in
operation. The second of the Po
laris subs, the Patrick Henry, is
scheduled to join the fleet belore
the end of this vear.
