manager, and his pretty secretary
are busy as bird doss lately, for
ski crowds are heavy. They said
last weekend the bowl seems lo
be heading (or a record-breaking
year, profit-wise.
That is not surprising, since re
ports indicate the corporation lost
money last year. And that was
the first year ot operation.
Mainly, Ihc trouble is Fortune

scantiest winter snowfall on rec
ord, or one of (he scantiest, and
the traditional spring snows that
were expected to provide sport

they are included in a very at
tractive package deal during week,
days.
A $12 per day package offers tow
or lift passage, lodging, two meals
and a ski lesson.
Parking facilities were expanded
to include a spacious area right
at (he lodge. There are other new
features within the lodge.
The corporation has a number
of plans for improvement, b u t
they will have to come in time.
One plan is to build quarters with
30 rooms or more for overnighters
and vacationers.

It is my sincere opinion the
corporation would have provided
living facilities before now except
lor pressure from southern Siski
you businessmen who would rath
er have the ski crowd lucratively
down in the flatlands. Some are
bowl stockholders.
I asked one such businessman
las! year why nn lodgings were
built at the bowl and nearly got a
fat lip.
The corporation has not aban
doned plans to build a tramway or
gondola lift or something like that
from the top of ihc ehairlift to a
site around ll.tlllll feet high near
one of the mountain's five glaciers.
They ought lo give free passage
to anyone brave enough lo ski
down from there.
And as lime goes by, the cor.
poration plans to install one or
two T-bar or similar lilts.
Plans for summer activities hor
der on the spectacular. But lhat
will provide material for a future
column, perhaps.
Futch wonders whether the cor
poration will break even this year
if ever. 1 think it will soon. Surely
this long dry spell has to end
.sometime and (he mountain will
again bear skiable snow deep into
summer.
New people arc moving north all
the time, some of them skiers, and
the novice crop was huge this
year.
As new facilities arc added and
the mountain and the whole area
gain maturity and prestige, Ihey
are sure lo attract bigger and
bigger crowds.
1 just don't think people have
had a chance to learn about Mt
Shasla yet the incomparable
slopes, its beauty, the line snow
and its long ski season.
It seems to me the corporation
ought lo fatten up its advertising
budget.
