Red Cross Nurses Trained
To Aid In American Plan
"In the battle against human
suffering, the Red Cross nurse is
tlie first to serve, the last to
rest." That sentiment was in the
hearts of many Americans in the
1059 observance of Red Cross
Nursing Services' Jubilee.
Last year, chapters maintained
a reserve of 58.000 professional
nurses for Red Cross duty call.
On Red Cross disaster relief op
erations, 97 per cent of the nurse
assignments were volunteer. Red
Cross volunteer nurses gave 4,000
full days, or the equivalent of
more than 10 calendar years, car
ing for disaster victims.
In the local chapter volunteer
nurses serve with each visit of
the bloodmobile, train for disaster
duty, and teach classes in Mother
and Baby Care to young expectant
parents. Although the volunteer
nurse role has changed from World
War I days when she was called
"The Rose of No Man's Land,"
her unselfish sharing of her pro
fessional skills contributes greatly
to the community's education and
health.

Service To Armed Forces
Plays Big Role In RC
More than half the time of
both staff and volunteers of Red
Cross and approximately one-third
of its budget about 35 million dol
lars are expended each year in
services to the armed forces and
veterans.
Many are the day-to-day serv
ices provided by the fieM direc
tors assigned to military units,
by the hospital workers who visit
the wards, and by the Home Serv
ice workers in the home - town
chapters of members of the armed
forces. These Red Cross represen
tatives daily assist with personal
and family problems, and they
provide the military with factual
information about home situations
that will assist them in making
important decisions. In addition to
providing this service from its
headquarters in the county library
building, the Klamath Basin Chap
ter has an office at Kingsley Field,
manned two days a week with
trained volunteers and staff mem
bers. Twice , during the last "year,
through the direct intercession o(
the American Red Cross with Hie
East German Red Cross, United
States servicemen who had been
held by the East German authori
ties were released to the custody
of the American Red Cross. To

Aid service which continues as one
of the best known and valuable
services down to the present day.

certificates to individuals who
availed themselves of free in
struction in first aid through class
es conducted by the Red Cross.
Through a corps of volunteer in
structors, the local chapter offers
free training in standard, ad
vanced and junior first aid. Al
most every one of us can recall a
time when a knowledge of first aid
came in handy: many of us can
recall a time when someone's life
was saved by artificial respiration
learned in a Red Cross course.
