Get Deflated
President Eisenhower was principal speaker at the 50th anniversary of the National Press Club.
By LUCIAN C. WARREN
ON his celebrated visit to Washington,
D. C, self-confident Nikita Khrushchev
got the red-carpet treatment from the cop
on the beat as well as from the President
of the United States.
Then he appeared as speaker before the
National Press Club of Washington, obvi
ously expecting the same kid-glove treat
ment What a shock for jovial Nikita!
"What were you doing when Stalin was
committing the crimes you chose to denounce
only after he died?" Khrushchev was asked
by club president William H. Lawrence im
mediately after the speech.
"A provocative question!" Nikita ex
ploded. "Malicious rumors and lies!"
Asked a moment later to justify Russia's
armed intervention in Hungary, Khrush
chev sneered that this "stuck in some peo
ple's throats like a dead rat," but made no
real effort at justification. Some eight ques
tions later, Khrushchev himself abruptly
terminated the question period after floun
dering on a requested explanation for his
"We will bury you" remark. Nothing "phys
ical," just "historical," he explained as he
beat a retreat
Khrushchev needn't have sulked about
his treatment by the Press Club. VlP-bait-ing
is the members' favorite sport. This
brash ness has helped build an improvident
group, founded in 1908 by some gregarious
newsmen, into the largest and richest club
of its kind.
Its 4,700 members, cream of the news
gathering world and allied professions, own
the tallest and largest private office build
ing in the capital. Meetings are held in the
luxurious top-floor quarters (rent-free) of
the $12-million building.
Impertinence was the order of the day long
before Khrushchev appeared on the scene.
Just a few weeks before Vice President
Harry S. Truman succeeded Franklin D.
Roosevelt to the Presidency in 1945, Tru
man played the piano at the club's wartime
canteen for servicemen. Movie actress Lau
ren Bacall happened to appear and was
hoisted atop the piano. As she posed cross
legged and a flustered Truman continued
playing, photographers did what comes nat
urally, resulting in the most widely pub
lished Washington picture since a midget
' sat on J. P. Morgan's lap.
Ten years later, members were told that
a prominent "mystery guest" would perform
that evening. When the strains of the "Mis
souri Waltz" came floating through closed
curtains, club members looked at each other
knowingly, exclaiming: "Ah, Harry Tru
man's in town again."
Instead, it was Vice President Richard
Nixon making his Washington debut as a
piano player. To add spice to the occasion, a
somewhat reluctant House Speaker Sam
Rayburn and an equally reticent Senate Ma
jority Leader Lyndon Johnson were per
suaded to join Nixon around the piano in a
few bars of bipartisan harmony.
Delighted to learn of Nixon's avocation,
the club later invited Truman and Nixon to
play a piano duet under club auspices.
