Cycle Club
Given Honors
ROSEBUnG, Ore. (AP) - The
Rumble Bees Motorcycle Club
was cited Thursday night by the
American Motorcycle Assn. as
the outstanding motorcycle club
In the nation.
The Rumble Bees was cited for
the role its members played in
Roscburg Aug. 7 after a truck
loaded with explosives blew up.
The explosives, equivalent to
52 World War II blockbuster
bombs, wiped out nearly 12 blocks
In the city of 13.000 persons
claimed 13 lives and did more
than $13 million dollars property
damage.
Reacting immediately alter the
blast at 1:07 a.m., the Rumble
Bees reported to police head
quarters. They were assigned to
patrol the blasted out streets.

from his motorcycle in the initial

The nalional association also

Poet Who Escaped Death

Caryl Chessman's favorite lit
crary figure through nearly 12
years in a death row cell is Fran
cois Villon, roguish 15th century
French poet who twice escaped
hanging.
Villon, celebrating his second
reprieve from doom, wrote a jubi
lant eight-line ballad which said,
in unmctered English translation:
"What d'you think of my appeal,
Gamier?
Was I wise or a fool?
livery beast looks to his own
skin,
And when he's trapped and
held he docs his utmost to get
free, if he can.
"When this homily (death sen
tence) was sung to me, without
rhyme or reason,
"Was that the time to keep my
mouth shut, hey?"
The verses of Villon, born in
1431, have particularly direct ap
peal lor him, Chessman smiling
ly acknowledged in an interview.
Chessman's gas chamber ex
ecution has been stayed eight
times by persistent, appeals. His
prolonged appeal struggle aroused
worldwide attention and consid
eration by the California Legisla
ture of repealing the death penally.
A legislative committee early

was aimed at abolishing capital
punishment.

This work has included courses in
French, psychology, history and
mathematics, lie said he has cov
ered llic equivalent of three col
lege years.
Chessman completed the last
two high school years in a pre
vious San Qucntin term. He also
became quite expert then in short
hand and typing.
Complaints Hit
By Attorneys
PORTLAND (AP) Attorneys
for nine college students charged
with disorderly conduct as a re
ult of picketing at the struck
Oregonian plant in Portland
termed the complaints faulty and
unconstitutional.
Judge Alan Brown of Municipal
Court granted the city attorney
one week to reply.
The nine, from Reed College
and Portland State College, were
arrested Feb. 13.
They were arrested when they
appeared in the wake of
proclamation by M a y o r Terry
Schrunk banning mass picketing
in the Portland newspaper strike.

of film folk out of work and even

Although the Screen Actors
Guild represents 14,000 members,
union spokesman said approxi
mately 9.000 members live in the
Hollywood area, 3,000 in New
York and the rest are scattered
throughout the nation.
Of the thousands who live here,
many are only part-time actors
who hold other jobs.
But, another 12.000 workers are
threatened with loss of employ
ment now that Hollywood's stu
dios are only operating at a
small percentage of capacity.
Most of that group are full time
employes.
A spokesman for the State Un
employment Compensation Office,
where actors, electricians, cleri
cal workers and other studio per
sonnel are applying for payments,
said that approximately 1200 have
sought aid.
So far though, no big stars have
been chauffeured up to the unem
ployment office in limousines ask
ing for help.
The seven major studios and
guild representatives made a new
effort today to end the strike
which began Monday.
9 Fail To Appear

district court here Thursday to
answer gambling charges forfeit
ed their bail.
The bail was $100 each for
seven arrested Feb. 8 and
c h a r g ed with permitting gam
bling in a building.
Two others forfeited $50 each.
They were accused of operating

ernment s responsibility for sup
porting much of the nation's re
search may lead to a scientific
post in the President's cabinet, a
State Department official said
Thursday.
Dr. Wallace R. Brode, science
adviser to Secretary of State
Christian A. Herter, told a Uni
versity of Texas audience a study
should be made of ways to inte
grate scientific activities with for
eign policy.
The government's reponsibility
to support a major share of re
search and applied-science pro-
rams must eventually center in
a coordinating establishment such
as a department of science,"
Brode said.

A coroner's jury Thursday ruled
truck driver John Garrett negli
gent in the March 1 collision of
his tanker-truck and a passenger
train. Garrett and 13 others lost

India-Red Talks
Date Announced
NEW DELHI, India (API-Indian
Prime Minister Nehru told
Parliament today that he has pro
posed April 20 lo Red Chinese
Premier Chou En-lai as the dale
for their meeting in New Delhi to
discuss their border dispute.
Peiping has not yet accepted the
date, but Chou said earlier he
would be willing to come to India
for talks in April.
Nehru had originally extended
the invitation for late .March. He
said the meeting would have to be
before April 29-30, when he is fly
ing to London for a Common
wealth Prime Ministers' confer
ence.
BAN EDEN'S MEMOIRS
BAGHDAD (UPI) The IraoJ
Government has banned Sir An
thony Eden's memoirs under the
'dancerous propaganda law. It
was announced Thursday.
A spokesman said the action
was taken because the autobio
graphy of the former British
prime minister the first volume
of which was published recently
under the title, "Full Circle"
had "unjustly attacked" the Iraqi
revolution and Premier Abdel Ka
rim Kassem.

verdale, Ore., school district and
one for $2.1M to the Clatskanie.
Ore., district.
The two grants by the federal
agency were reported Thursday
by Rep. Waller Norblad R-Orc
In a telegram to the Associated
Press.
The money is provided under a
federal law which gives linancial
aid to schools in areas where
there has been a large influx of
federal employes.
