tor brings a season win-loss mark
of 15-4 which includes 13 wins
and one loss in Wilco League com

game of their regular schedule
against Scappoose Friday night.
The contest had been forced to
postponement because ol inclement
weather conditions earlier in the
.season.
A victory over Sandy in the
first round boosts the Pelicans into
Ihe quarter-finals Thursday after
noon at 4:15 when they will tan
gle with Ihe winner of the Lake
Oswego-La Grande contest which
is played immediately prior to the
Pel-Pioneer game on Wednesday.
The opening round Tuesday night

tween Cleveland of Portland and
Albany High.
The remainder of the Wednes
day action pits Bcaverton and
South Eugene at 1:45 p.m.; Jet
icrson of Portland and South Sa

Pelicans Paul Bishop. Dean Dun
son, Bob Lewis, Bruce Brick-
ner, Gary Pat.kc, rreddic Biehn,
Steve Binney, Don Eastman, Bob

gon Conference points, leads Ihe
Pel scorers with a 16.4 per game

The number Iwo scorer is Dun-

Defense Wins
ForWarriors
PHILADELPHIA (AP) The
talk in the Philadelphia Warriors
dressing room was not of Ihe 40
points scored by Paul Arizin or
the 35 by Wilt Chamberlain but
of defense.
Coach Neil Johnston, who was
hard to hear over the hubbub as
the Warriors celebrated their 115
92 win over Syracuse Friday night
in Ihe first of the National Basket
ball Assn.'s semifinal Eastern
playoff, virtually shouted, "De
fense won it."
"When you hold a team like
Syracuse under 100 points, it's
quite a feat. They are quite an of
fensive team," said the coach.
He said he was particularly im
pressed with the job Woody
Sauldsberry did on the veteran
Dolph Schayes. The Syracuse ace
scored only 17 points.
Syracuse Coach Paul Seymour
predicted his club would win the
second game Sunday at Syracuse
in Ihe best-of-three scries for Ihe
right to take on Boston in the
Eastern final.
The Warriors led throughout
S3-26 at the end of the first period
and 55-46 at the half.

Moyer, who had won four in a

The Mustangs never trailed
Ihroughoul the game, but the Wolv-

period, on Ted Kane's free throw,
35-35 wilh 4:20 remaining., The
Mustangs snapped back when
Randy Miller stole a loose ball
and traveled half the court lo
break the tic and put Ihe victors
in front for Ihe remainder of the
tussle.
Both clubs began the contest
with a substantially low shooting
percentage, but the Malin five
held a ll-'J advantage at the end
of the quarter. Rick lllian scored
live points in the period, but com
muted a rash of three fouls in
the process.
The Mustangs took command at
the start of Ihe second canto wilh
Rick and Jim Long leading Ihe
scoring parade. Long tallied four
jump shols from 10 feet out with
Rick equaling his teammate's
scoring punch. Ihe Mustangs
held a 31-25 halflime advanlage.
The Malin quint's pressing style
of olfense began lo falter in Ihe

put the Mustangs ahead for good,
Rick and Ed Staslny followed with

lead at the end of the period.
Six-foot, 3-inch Joe Hendrix of
the Alsea five nearly won the
game for his leant with his bril

fourth quarter points. The effort
was shy of victory, though, when
Rick lllian re-entered the game
