The Klamath County Sheriff'.
Posse may be host in late sum
mer to members of the Oregon
Association of Mounted Fosses for
the annual weekend trail ride
The annual event usually draws
an attendance of 150 to 200 visi
tors including wives and children
of the members.
For the last two years the ride
has originated at Todd Lake, west
of Rend.
The invitation for Klamath to
entertain this year was extended
to the Klamath Posse last week
during (he annual convention at
Eugene, attended by 270 posse
sion Irom 18 Oregon, chapters
Eleven riders and some wives at
tended from here.
Members here will meet Mon
day night, February 20, at the
courthouse to draft information to
he sent to the Oregon Association
hoard regarding Klamath County's
qualification for hosting the ride
here.

When 1 came to Oregon in 18.12
1 was lfi years old. and the near
est school was at Brownsville. Be
ing an orphan, I had no home
lies to hind me so I moved to
Brownsville to go to school. I
stayed with Rev. and Mrs. Mc
Kinney, doing the housework for
my board and teaching the prima
ry students for my tuition.
Miss Whipple who was one of
Ihe teachers in the school had
been engaged to be married to a
missionary, but after she had come
out hero to earn money for her
wedding outfit, he wrote to her
telling her they both made a mis
take and broke the engagement.
Voting women were scarce in those
days and as Miss Whipple was
very popular she was soon engaged.
I was 17 years old and was
planning to go on Willi my educa
tion. At that tftue tiiere was a
young storekeeper in Brownsville
who was paying a good deal of at
tention to me. His name was Ze
Hus F. Moody. Miss Whipple told
me that she was going to be mar
ried as soon as school had closed.
She asked me why I didn't get

did, so we could have a double
wedding. I thought it over and de
cided it was a pretty good plan
We held Ihe closing exercises for
our school on November 1!, 1HU
After Ihe children had -delivered
their recitations and dialogues,
Rev. John McKinney went to the
front of the platform and said "1
believe we have some young peo
ple here tonight who arc tired of
living alone." As he said this Miss
Edna Whipple and Ouy Colbert
and Mr. Moody and myself stepped
up to the platlorm.

Ihe marriage ceremony, winch was
hearlily applauded. No one had
known anything about it, so they
supposed it was part ot the per
formance. They had no idea that
the ceremony was in earnest. The
school exercises were held in the
MethcxlistCniirch, so we had a
church wedding with a good big
audience. William Blakcly, who
now lives in Pendleton, was pres
ent at our wedding. So was Rev.
Baxter Gray now a Congregational
minister of Portland. In fact, you
will run across a good many peo
ple who were at our wedding.
Among the ones I remember who
were there are the Blakelys, Wat-
ters, Kirks, Browns, Spaldings and
Uncle Hugh Brown for whom
Brownsville was named. We cele
brated our With wedding anniver
sary last year, (1013).
We left Brownsville in 18.i5, com
ing to Salem. We went from Sa
lem to San Francisco where Mr.
Moody secured work at surveying
Fiom there we went back to Illi
nois where we stayed five years
coming to The' Dalles in WYl. In
IM Mr. Moody started the town
of Umatilla.
Our first child, Malcolm, was
born in Brownsville in 1854; Zenas
and William were born in Jackson
ville, Illinois, while Ralph and
Edna were born at The Dalles. My
daughter Edna is n a lit e d for
Edna Whipple who at first was
my teacher, wiin whom I later
laught school and who still later
was married with mc.
This is the end of her slory of
her trip across the plains in 1S52.
In their later years Mr. and
Mrs. Moody lived with their daugh
ter and son-in-law, Eugene 0. Mc-
Cprnack, . Jn .. SaJerrK-Aftei; .her
daugnter died Mrs. Moody was the
manager of the household until her
death March 7, 1915, aged 79.
The following is the obituary no
tice in the Oregon Journal, March
8, 1M5, "Mary. Stepheflson Moody
died last evening at her home, 825
Court Street, suddenly when she
had just returned from churfclS.
She is survived by her husband,
tour sons, Malcolm P. of The
Dalles, Zenas A. and William II.
of Ashland, and Ralph E. of Port
land. She was born in Lebanon.
Indiana, April 18, 1836. Her par-
