A pair of rough competitors,
Redmond, the state champs, and
the Bend Lava Bears, provide the
last regular season action for the
Klamath Union High wrestling
team this weekend.
The Redmond squad, which
boasts a pair of Oregon prep
champions, will tangle wilh the
Whitebirds beginning at 7 p.m.
on Pelican Court Friday, while
Bend will appear here Saturday
afternoon at 1:30.
Admission charges to either
event are 75 cents for adults and
25 cents for students. Jayvee
matches are slated both days, in
addition to the varsity competi
tion.
The Pelicans have met and de
feated both the visiting clubs ear
lier in the season. They topped
the Redmond club 23-21 and
slopped Bend 34-16. This weekend,
however, the Pels will again work
minus the service of their own
state champion, heavyweight John
Hancock, who Is still recuperating
from an operation. Coach DeLance
Duncan said he planned to skip
the heavyweight bouts this week.
Dave Ladro, a 115-pounder, and
Clarence Seal, 148, are the Red
mond title bearers. Another threat
to be reckoned with is Joe Ricci.

Although the Pels have not yet
cleared the 106, 123 or 148-pound
classifications, the balance of the
varsity weekend berths were filled
in Wednesday intersquad wrestle-
offs.
Milo Crumrine will handle the
98-pound class; Dave Vetkos or
Gary Head, the 106 class; Gary
Leavitt has the 115-pound assign
ment: Sherd Duncan or Fred Tra
cy will get the nod in the 123
weight; co-captain Trenton Doug
las will go in the 130 division;
Dan Ross, also co-captain, has the
job in the 136 weight; Dave Con-,
zales, 141; Larry Wishart and
Steve Shults will battle it out for
the 148-pound slot; Billy O'Neil
is set for the 157 job; Art Mills,
the 168, and Joe Cox will wind
up the card for the KU team in
the 178-pound division.
This is the last chance prep
wrestling fans will have to see Jft
KU squad in action prior to their,
entrance in the all-important dis;
trict tournament set for Medfonf
next weekend.
District winners will then go on
to compete for the state titles i(i
bouts to be held in Corvallif
March 11 and 12.

Howell To Quit Next Season

son will be the last for Jim Lee
Howell as head coach of the New
York Giants in the National Foot
ball League.
"I'm a naturally lazy and re
laxed guy," said Howell Wednes
day as he dropped a surprise
bombshell of his resignation at a
luncheon to introduce the new
NFL commissioner, Pete Rozelle.
"Although we lost only three
games last fall, I couldn't forgei
the defeats."
Howell, 45, has led the club t(
three Eastern Division champion
ships and one world championship
in -six years as head coach. The
Giants lost the world title to Bal
timore the last two years. After
next year, he'll become personnel;
director for the Giants. At no cui
in salary, now estimated at $22,
000 a year.
