ONE OF THE MOST VISITED public buildings in Bonanza is the attractive Bonanza Li
brary, owned and maintained by the Bonanza Womens Club which was organized in
1925. Mrs. Fred (Elsal Rueck is the only charter member now living in Bonanza. The
library building was completed and an opening tea was held February 27, 1934. The club
has 37 paid-up members who give a bazaar each December to raise money for main
tenance of the building.
Songs For Campaigners
'Bwstin' Out
WASHINGTON (AP)-Campaign
songs are bustin out all over.
Pros and amateurs, mostly the
latter, are turning them out al
most daily as if they were trying
lo outdo the scores of ditties that
enlivened the Whig-Democratic
campaign of 1840.
None has caught on nationally
as yet, no doubt because the presi
dential tickets have, not yet been
named.
But at the delegate-picking pri
mary warniups, particularly in Wis
consin, Ihe tunes have been
strummed from guitars and blared
from sound trucks from one end
of the state to the other.
Wisconsin is where Sens. John
F. Kennedy (Mass) and Hubert II
Humphrey (Minn) are dueling in
significant Democratic presi
dential primary April 5.
Kennedy already has two songs
Brown Seeks
Smog Law
SACRAMENTO (UPI) - Gov
Edmund G. Brown will go before
Ihe Legislature Alonday to ask for
a local option law requiring mo
lorisls to put a smog-stifling de
vice on their exhausts.
The new law would be part of
a six-point program designed
Brown said, to protect "that in
valuable natural resource the air
we breathe. It would cost
$2,005,000.
The governor disclosed his pro
gram Tuesday by making public
the message he will give the
Legislature at the start of its
special session on smog. In addi
lion lo requiring the exhaust de
vices, the governor would:
Spend $1,410,000 for a motor
vehicle testing laboratory.
Create a motor vehicle pollu
(ion control board costing $25,000
during fiscal 19U0.
Spend $jM).000 lo begin
slatewide air-monitoring program.
Make the exhaust device man
datory in a particular county after
a majority vole by the county
board of supervisors.
Set penalties for motorists who
fail to equip their autos with the
device.
Brown noted that no smog de
vice (or auto exhausts had been
thoroughly (ested or approved by
the slate. He said (hat the new
laboratory, lo be run by the De
partment o( Public Health, would
conduct such lests.
State Drivers
Slowing Down
SACRAMENTO (UPI) - Cali
fornia motorists seem to be driv-
ng somewhat slower in open
country since the new 85 mile an
hour speed law went into effect.
The Division of Highways said
Tuesday that it had conducted a
before and after speed check at
three spots in (he San Bernardino
County desert. The division found
average speeds down three to five
miles an hour from a former av
erage of no. Also, there was a
marked reduction" in speed limit
violators.
The division made ils check be
fore and alter speed signs were
erected. The 65-mile limit went
nlo effect Jan. 1.

going for him. Humphrey also has
two, and two more are on the way
by young women attached to his
Washington headquarters.
Sen. Stuart Symington (D-Mo)
also has had a song written about
his all but declared candidacy.
None has yet showed for Sen.
Lyndon Johnson 'D-Tex) or Vice
President Richard M. Nixon, but
Ihe Republican National Commit
lee reports it is receiving half a
dozen a week plugging the GOP
and Nixon.
One recording received by the
Republicans from, Omaha is an
original tune with a football chant,
"Go, Go, Go Republican."
"We are not pushing any one at
Ihe moment," says Hal Short, Re
publican publicity chief.
One of 'the Kennedy songs played
last week in Wisconsin is adapted
from "High Hopes" by Sammy
Cahn and Jimmy. Van Heusen in
(he movie "Hole In the Head." A
couple of lines from the campaign
tune by the same team:
Everyone is voting for Jack
"cause he's got what all the
rest lack.
The tune has been recorded. On
Ihe flip side of the record is an
other by (lie same wrilers taken
from their song, "All the Way
Kennedy is showing
Thai's why Kennedy is going
All the way.
To the tune of "Old Time Reli
gion," Lt. Gov. Philleo Nash of
Wisconsin, a Humphrey supporter,
has been playing his guitar over
that stale and singing:
. I'm going. to vote for Hubert
Humphrey
I'm going to vole for Hubert
Humphrey
I'm going lo vole for Hubert
Humphrey .
He's the man for me.
Joe Glazer, educational director
of Ihe United Rubber Workers, did
the lyrics (sic) for that one. And
this one, too, to the tune of "Yel
low Hose of Texas":
The man from Minnesota
Is for you and you and you
He fights for all the people
And nol for just a few.
One of Ihe girls in Humphrey's
headquarters here is preparing a
third song tuned to "On Wiscon
sin." Another, who apologized for
having the flu while singing it to
the writer over the telephone, said
her masterpiece will be used in
the West Virginia primary. Part of
it, based on that state's university
song:
Now is the time boys
To make the big noise
No matter what the fat cats
say
So vole the Hubert Humphrey
way.
That Symington ditty showed up
last Saturday in St. Louis. It's
ailed "Mr. Number One," and
winds up this way:
I'm for Stuart Symington
When the campaign's done
He'll be Mister Number One
Stuart Symington.
It doesn't take much of memorv
jog to recall the "Sidewalks of
New York," (AI Smilh-1!)28)
'Happy Days Are Here Again,'
(FDR-19321, "O. Susanna." (Alt
Landon-l!W6, and "I'm Looking
Over a Four-Leaf Clover" iTaft-
l!)48-52.
But one has lo dig into the his
tory books for "Tippecanoe and
Tyler Too," one of scores ot cam
paign ditties written for the Har
rison-Van Buren race in 1840.
And not many people are living
today who can say they heard the
one about Horace Greeley in his
1872 campaign against President
Grant. Greeley used to campaign
in a white hat and linen duster,
so the tune, arranged to "Yes
My Darling Daughter," went this
way:
Mother, may I go out to swim
Yes. my dear, go freely
Put on your white hat, and
your old while coal
' And vote for Horace Greeley.
The song didn't help. Greeley
won only six states.
