In Nationwide Contest
The Flower and Garden Koun
dation announced today lhat it is
sponsoring a nationwide "Young
America Gardens" contest for
grade school, high school and col
lege undergraduates to promote
gardening and its pleasures among
young America.
The long list of prizes is topped
by eleven $100 college scholarships
(or hundreds of high school sen
iors and college undergraduates.
In addition, other prizes such as
Ihese. are being offered to con
testants:
Hundreds of gift certificates
ood for nursery stock of the win
ner's choice, roses, clematis, del
phiniums, hollies, fertilizer, . glad
and tulip bulbs, miscellaneous
plants, shrubs and trees.
These prizes are being offered
through the generous support of
firms across the country associat
ed with horticulture in some way.
Also offered is a free surprise
gift to every young person en
tering the contest.
Only requirement for contest en
try is that every contestant must
have a gardening project of his
own choosing and doing. For ex
ample, he may have a vegetable
garden, house plants, rose garden
perennial planting, patio, window
box any project as long as it is
of a horticultural nature.
Students must submit a photo
graph and accompanying lct.er ex
plaining their particular garden
ing project, its aims and accom
plishments, by the closing date of
midnight, September 1, 1960. The

her officers. All installing officers
were presented with a gift for their

B. Age 13 through high school

difference in soil, climate and
growing conditions. The areas will
be 11 in number, as follows: New
England, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast
ern, West Central, North Central.

cently with Bernice Moffitt at her
lume in Lakeview. Mrs. Birdie

user. The club voted to donate $3
tn the New March of Dimes fund
half to Lake and half to Modoc,
counties. The next meeting will be
held at Nettie's Steak House here

VALENTINE DANCE
Sons and Daughters of Italy in
Klamath Falls gauged their Valen
tine dance Saturday night in Sacred
Heart Parish Hall such a success
they are going to have another
soon. The date will be announced
later. Approximately 80 attended
the evening buffet where tables
were decorated in a Valentine mo
tif. Music wa provided by a com
bo, Pete Colley, Les Spanaus and
Bill Cummings. Proceeds will go
into a lodge social fund.
