Meany's criticism of a Negro con
; gressman may boomerang against

litical and legislative goals.

' they are worried that Meany's re-
marks may tend to harden Negro
workers' feelings against the AFL
; CIO and result in even more dif-
i, . ficulty in getting labor wanted

Meany said Monday that Rep.
Adam Clayton Powell (D-NY), due

Meany at the AFL-CIO convention

angrily inquired how Randolph
had become a self - appointed
guardian over Negroes.
Meany argued then for consist
ent persuasion toward compliance
with AFL-CIO non-discrimination
policies. One railroad union, the
Brotherhood of Railroad Train
men, has since eliminated a ban
on Negro members.
Only one other national AFL-
CIO union, Meany said Monday.
