Algiers Fight
Replaced
By Shame
ALGIERS (API - (passed by
censor) This was a city of de
fiant barricades, of hope mixed
with uncertainly.
Algiers is about to bury its dead
civilians and gendarmes felled
Sunday by bullets tired by French
men against Frenchmen in a
moment of panic.
Today shame replaced the heal
of fighting.
But armed men continued to
hold out in the barricades in the
heart of the city. They stood
around campfires on the sidewalks
and grimly clutched guns.
Other armed men Frenchmen
like themselves have thrown cor
dons around their encampment.
They are the troops called in to
sea! off the troubled area.
No one believed after bloody
Sunday that Frenchmen would
again fire upon Frenchmen in
Algiers.
Yet men inside the barricaded
area vowed they would not sur
render, that they would not leave
the stronghold until Algeria is pro
claimed forever French.
Most of the armed men inside
the barricaded encampment have
no political doctrine. Their only
doctrine was a powerful throaty
roar "Algeria is French."
But many of those who led them
espoused right-wing ideas. Some
said it was a solution of despair
and fear of fear that this coun
try in which they formed an elite
minority would some day be run
by rebels.
Some solution has to come. No
one knows how.
As night shrouded the city
paratroops spread out cots and
blankets on the sidewalk. Near
machincguns and field packs a
portable radio broadcast a Bee
thoven concerto.

Crew Rescues
Saddle Pony
PENDLETON (API Nine men
worked four hours Sunday to
rescue a saddle pony which had
fallen into the Umatilla River,
east of town.
Pain Schacher, a Pendleton
teen-ager, was leading the horse
along a steep bank when it fell
into the neck - deep river. The
horse became mired in the soft
river hottom and was unable to
get out.
Buck Lietiallen, CNperienced
with horses, was called. He re-
ruited additional help. The crew
dug down into the river bank so
they could get a work area. The
horse was then lassoed and pulled
out. It suffered severe neck
bruises from the rope, but other
wise was all right. .

WALTER SLEZAK-KAT1NA PAXINOU,
Judge Unshaken
By Novel Alibi
CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP-
Bcrtrand R. Duhamcl, 22, Woon-
socket, had a novel alibi in Dis
trict Court Sunday where he ap
peared for driving 100 miles an
hour.
He told the court he was driv
ing with the girl he loves when a
rival for her affections pulled up
in front of them and drove at 10
miles an hour.
Duhamcl said ho became infur
iated and put on a burst of speed,
just when slate troopers appeared.
He was Fined $10 after Judge
Ouillaume Myotic cautioned him
ho is likely to become a corpse
before he becomes a bridegroom
That view was voiced by repre
sentatives of Northwest states,
utilities and industries at a meet-
:ng here today, and California's
spokesman, Ralph M. lirody, rep
resenting Gov. Pat Brown, said
his state would do all it could to
protect the rights ol Northwest
customers.
Bonneville Power Administra
tion recently recommended as
economically leasible a 2.10,000-
volt line, to be built by California
private utilities, connecting to
Bonneville power. The purpose
would be to allow California to
draw on Northwest power when
surpluses were available. Con
gressional approval is needed.
A committee of 13 representa
tives of interested groups met
today to make their recommenda
tion and it developed that nearly
all were worried that public agen
cies in California might get con
nected to the wire which, under
the law, would give them prefer
ence over private industries or
utilities in the Northwest.
Ken Billingtnn, representing
public agencies in the Northwest,
recommended that no action be
taken on the inter-tie until the law
provides protection.
