Singer Conquers Disease
Which Curbed Her Career
By BOB THOMAS
AP Movic-TV Writer
HOLLYWOOD (AP)-The cliche
'hopeless cripple" might have
been applied to singer Connie
Haines when she lay abed for two
years, unable to walk.
But it would have been a mis
take. She never gave up hope that
fhe would conquer the bone ail
ment that paralyzed her.
Her story began three years
ago. She was at the peak of her
Morse Raps
Army Report
WASHINGTON (AP)-The Corps
of Engineers Monday released its
revised Columbia River Basin
Report. Criticism of part of it
came quickly.
Sen. Wayne Morse (D-Ore) said
parts of the report were "master
pieces of doubletalk."
The report, Morse said, "is
merely a timid expedient. It docs
not take a firm stand in the inter
est of engineering findings" on the
Middle Snake River.
Morse said the corps "almost
grudgingly concedes the vast
superiority" of the Ncz Perce
project for developing the Middle
Snake and Salmon rivers.
That project, he said, would
cost less and have a better benefit
cost ratio "than even the new
streamlined alternative Hi g h
Mountain Sheep -Lower Canyon
combination."
Lt. Gen. E. C. Itschner, chief
of the engineers, recommended 13
new projects that would cost an
estimated $1,1:12,138,0(10.
Among them would be the con
troversial High Mountain Sheep
Dam on the Middle Snake. It
would cost 103 million dollars.
A private utility combine, Paci
fic Northwest Power Co., also
wants to build at the High Moun
tain Sheep site.
Sen. Richard Ncubcrgcr ID-
Ore) said the report added to his
conviction that a moratorium on
the Middle Snake is desirable un
til Congress can pass on the mer
its of all proposed projects.
Train Derailed;
Twelve Injured
STAFFORD, Tex. (AP) - The
Santa Fe Railroad's Texas Chief
struck a stalled truck-trailer load
ed with pipe and was derailed
Monday night, injuring 12 aboard
the fast passenger train.
Engineer George Marchand spot
ted the trailer stuck on a muddy
crossing as the train rounded a
curve about 15 miles west of Hous
ton. The impact demolished the trail
er and knocked four cars and four
locomotive units off the track.
None of the injured were in ser
ious condition. The list included
7 passengers and 5 dining car
crewmen.

success. Her records were selling
well and an appearance as sub
ject of "This is Your Life" had
helped bring her the top bookings
of her career.
Connie's personal life was joy
ful, loo. The wife of aircraft ex
ecutive Robert DeHaven, she was
the mother of daughter Kimberly
3 months. She had just learned
she was to have another baby,
"I was playing at the Biltmore
Bowl in Los Angeles," she re
called. "When I went onstage, my
left leg started to buckle under
iiie I thought it was nerves or
something and didn't pay too
much attention.
"By the tilth night, I couldn't
walk onstage. But I could cover
up by sort of .dancing on. I had
never missed a performance in
my life and believed the show
should go on and all that. Finally
the manager told me it was too
agonizing to watch me go on and
he got another act.
"The next day I went to the
doctor for X-rays. I remember
feeling that day as if my bones
were just disintegrating.
The X-rays showed that her hip
bones had separated and one was
dangling, twisting the spinal cord.
A hormone unbalance aggravated
her condition and she was ordered
to bed.
"Still, I felt no pain," she said.
"I never did. The doctor said it
came from my being so relaxed."
Connie was confined to bed
throughout the pregnancy, except
hen she ventured out on crutches
against orders. Lacking pain, she
was unaware that the cartilage
between her bones was being worn
away, further impeding her re
covery. After a son Robert was
born, she still remained immobile
for 13 months.
Her faith never wavered.
"An experience like this can
only deepen your faith," she re
marked. "I always remembered
Romans 8:38-9: 'For I am sure
that neither death, nor life. . .nor
height, nor depth, nor anything
else in all creation, will be able
to separate us from the love of
God in Christ Jesus our Lord.'"
Now recovered after therapy,
Connie has played a singing date
in New Orleans and is starting to
record this week for Dot Records.
She is also discussing a TV series
dealing with faith and children.

Flunk Public Service Test
BOSTON (AP) American col
lege graduates are flunking the
test of public service, and their
intellectual failure is even more
shocking, according tq Dr. Perry
Epler Gresham, president of Beth
any College.
Although many have done well
financially, he said, they have not
provided public leadership in the
crucial areas of politics, econom
ics, and public philosophy.
Dr. Gresham, here for the 46th
annual meeting of the Assn. of
American Colleges, spoke at an
alumni reunion Monday night.
More than 500 college and uni

are here for the AAC meeting.
