Fearless Fraley's Facts, Figures
By OSCAR FRALEY
NEW YORK UPI Fearless
Fraley's facts and figures:
Johnny Unitas, the big noise of
pro football as the sparkplug of
the world champion Baltimore
Colts, is just another quiet man
around the house.
"Johnny' doesn't talk too much
at home," smiles his wife, Doro
thy. "He likes to sit and watch
television. I sometimes think if
he had to choose between me and
television he'd take televi
aion." ... A common wifely com
plaint...
Parry O'Brien, the California
colossus who just has won the
Sullivan Award as the year's
outstanding amateur athlete, cred
its rival Dallas Long, the young
ster from Southern California,
with spurring him to new heights.
"I really went back to work
when it looked like he would best
my world record," Parry admits.
Young Heavy Scores TKO,
Picks Off First Main Event
NEW YORK (AP) - Tom Mc-
Neeley, sturdy son of a Boston
florist, still is an unbeaten young
heavyweight with his first main
event under his belt.
McNeeley got off a little easier
than expected Friday night when
he scored a technical knockout
over George Logan of Boise, Ida
ho. Dr. Alexander Schiff of the
New York State Athletic Commis
sion, stopped the bout after he ex
amined Logan's eye cut in his
corner after the end of the fourth

Dies In Accident
ARAB, Ala. (UPI) - Billy
Rhoads, a promising college foot
ball star, climbed atop a brush
pile to flush a rabbit while hunt
ing on New Year's Day. Suddenly,
be stumbled and fell backward.
His 12-gauge shotgun discharged
and the blast struck Rhoads in
the chest. He died moments later
in the arms of his brothers, Har
old, 22, and Glenn, 18, his com
panions on the hunt.
Young Rhoads, 20, entered the
University of Alabama last fall
and was an "excellent prospect"
on the freshman football squad.
QUEEN'S PLATE SET
TORONTO (UPI) - The Wist
running of the Queen's Plate, the
oldest stakes race in North Amer
ica, will be staged a' Toronto's
Woodbine race track on Satur
day. June 11. the Jocksy Club Ltd
innounced Friday.
WIN SKATE TITLES
SQUAW VALLEY, Calif. (LTD
Don Mike Anthony of Los An
geles won the senior men's com
pulsory figures title of the Paci
fic Coast figure skating cham
iMrt Friday and Gale Thomas,
also of Los Angeles, won the
Junior women' title.
Strict training and a regimen of
weight lifting he needs more
muscles? sent him to his pend
ing world mark of 63 feet, four
inches . . . and he'll be a solid
choice to win the Olympics...
Waterways Are Crowded
Joe Lapchick, the St. John's
basketball coach, recalls that
when he and Dartmouth Coach
Doggie Julian were coaching in
pro basketball. Doggie protested
a $100 fine for unbecoming lan
guage. NBA President Maurice
Podoloff put Doggie on the car
pet and read off a word by word
account of Julian's remarks.
"Is that what you said?" Podo
loff asked.
"I remember the adjectives!"
Doggie frowned, "but I don't
remember the nouns."...
The waterways are really get
ting crowded. There were 7,800,
000 pleasure craft afloat in and
around the U.S. last year as 39
million enthusiasts spent $2,475,-
as a fourth-round TKO.
McNeeley, 196'4, dropped Logan,
202, with a left hook in the first
round. He said it was the first
time he ever knocked anybody
down with his left hand. Logan
said it was the first time he had
been on the deck.
McNeeley, 22, was pleased
about the knockdown. "I've been
working and working on that
hook," he said in a Boston ac
cent. "My right hand always has
been my big punch."
Logan, 23, had lost only to Hur
ricane Jackson in 14 previous
bouts. McNeeley now has won 16
straight and only two have gone
the route.
"I was just beginning to get to
him," said Logan, who probably
will need eight stitches to close
the cuts around his left eye. All
three officials had the fight 2-2
in rounds after the fourth.
McNeeley will be offered a
Garden date Feb. 5 or Feb. 12
With Thoerner Ahsman, unbeaten
Swedish fighter who may come to
New York if he does not get a
European title bout with Ger
many's Hans Kalbfell. The Gar
den also plans to import Lennart
Risberg, another Swedish heavy
who is advised by Ingemar Jo
hansson's adviser, Edwin Ahl-
quist.
Birds Sparse
Over Most
Of Oregon
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Waterfowl hunting is sparse in
most of Oregon, but generally
good in scattered lower Klamath
and Poe Valley grainfields of
south central Oregon.
Elsewhere in the state, here is
the state Game Commission's re
port by area:
SOUTHWEST
Douglas County waterfowl hunt
ing is fair. The same is true in
the Coos Bay area. Jump hunters
are bagging a few in Coquille Val
ley ditches. The Rogue River val-l
ley probably will be poor to fair
depending on the weather.
NORTHEAST
Waterfowl hunting is slow In
most areas due to mild weather.
Goose hunting is fair in Umatilla
County when it's foggy. Some fair
to good hunting is reported in the
Wallowa Valley near sloughs.
SOUTHEAST
Some geese remain at Summer
Lake, Goose Lake and Warner
Valley, but success is minimal.
Snake River and Malheur River
basin duck shooting prospects are
onor to fair. Stormy weather, if
it comes, could improve hunting.
000,000 staying afloat . . . There
were 5,845,000 outboards in use
and the sailors even invaded the
highways with 1,750,000 boat
trailers...
Recalls Great Team
When they talk about all-time
great football teams, don't over
look the Georgia Tech team which
in 1!)16 beat Cumberland, 222-0,
an all-time record. This team
went on to beat Wake Forest,
33-0; Furman 25-0; Pennsylvania,
41-0; Davidson, 32-10; Washington
& Lee, 63-0; Vanderbilt, 83-0; Tu
lane, 48-0; Carlisle Indians, 98-0;
and Auburn, 68-7 ... Top that
Real look-alikes are George Lo
gan of Boise, Idaho, and Tom
.McNeeley of Boston, the heavy
weight rivals in Madison Square
Garden Friday night. Matchmak
er Teddy Brenner relates that,
when he was preparing the fight
posters, he held up a picture of
each man and jokingly asked
McN'eeley's manager. Pete Ful
ler:
Which picture do you want me
to use?"
Fuller pointed to one photo
and said seriously; "That one.
He looks more ferocious there."
"Well," chuckled Brenner,
"That's a picture of vour oddo-
nent, Logan.
Mavbe it's understandable, at
that. McNeeley has been going to
psychiatrist to cure a bad
temper.
