Parachute
May Be Clue
In Mystery
COOS BAY. Ore. A1' - A
parachute, snagged high in a 200-
foot fir tree wilh the harness
(naps still buckled, may provide
the answer to what happened to
a man who vanished in a plane
crash 14 years ago.
The parachute was In the upper
branches of the tree felled in a
forest located in the Lake Creek
area of Western Douglas County.

On Nov. 26, 1045, an Air Force
C46 en route from there to MC'
Chord Field, Taconia, Wash.,
crashed in fog when it ran out
cf gas.
The pilot and the copilot rode
the plane down and died. The
other 10 men aboard bailed out
and nine were found alive. No
trace ever was found of the 10th,
Sgt. Robert T. W. Neal, of Los
Angeles.
The buckled harness on the
'chute made it appear as if who
ever was in it never got out alive
One of the nine rescued was
caught high in a fir tree. His
cries attracted loggers who got
him down.
The 'chute, stenciled 42-46647-93,
was sent to Scdalia Base, now
called Whiteman Air Force Base,
to see if it had been issued to
Neal.
An officer at the base said rec
ords of the 1945 operations had
been sent elsewhere. He said it
was unlikely any identification
would come from it because 10
or 12 usually were carried cm a
plane. A man, the officer said,
would simply pick up the closest
one.
.The discovery came Friday
when Jim and Ray Gabbard, con
tract loggers for Weyerhaeuser
Timber Co., felled the tree. It was
an hour and a half ride and hike
in from a road.

Clergyman, Wife Killed In Accident
BEND, Ore. (AP) A Salem
clergyman and his wife, driving
to Buhl, Idaho, to spend the
Christmas holiday with relatives,
were killed Monday when their
car left an icy highway and overturned.
Dead were Dr. Brooks Moore.
50, pastor of the First Methodist
Church in Salem for 12 years, and
his wife, Feme.
Both were thrown from the car.
He was killed outright. Mrs.
Moore died about 10 minutes later.
The accident happened about 70
miles east of here in freezing fog
that coated roads and telephone
lines with ice, halting telephone
service to Burns.

DEERFIELD, 111. (AP) - The
village park board, with $550,000
at its disposal, meets tonight to
map plans for acquisition of the
site of a planned interracial hous
ing subdivision in this all - white
iuburban community.
The park board wants to buy
the land from the builders with
funds voted Monday in a village
retcrendum. A record R6 per cent
of the eligible voters in this Chi
cago suburb of 10,000 turned out
to give a 2 1 approval to the
board's $550,000 bond issue referendum.
The board plans to add six tracts
of land to the village park system,
Including two that make up the
proposed integrated Floral Park
project.
Altliough the ballot contained only
a "yes" or "no" on the bond
issue, the vote was regarded as
a censure of the Floral Park proj
ect in which the builders said 10
to 12 of the SI homes would be
old to Negroes.
The builders, Progress Develop
ment Corp., have indicated no de
sire to sell the Floral Park land
They already have rejected one
park board offer of SlKti.999.
Park Board President James
Mitchell has said that if the land
can't be mirchascd, the board
would instigate condemnation pro
ceedings. A long court fight ap
peared probable.
One Couple
Makes Sure
WILKESBORO, N.C. (AP) One
couple made sure, and the other
3D married by Elsie Foster since
July 1 had the assurance of Judge
Robert Gambill today that they
ore firmly hitched.
Miss Foster, who works in the
Wilkes County Register of Deeds
Office, had performed the cere
monies thinking she was a justice
of the peace. However, it came
to light over the weekend she had
failed to qualify for a two-year
appointment by not taking oath of
office in the prescribed 90-day
period.
The Superior Court jurist told
Miss Foster, 38, that "technical
ly the couples might not be mar
ried but they entered into the
ceremonies in good faith. I feel
they are actually married.
'I would not entertain any
(court) action." he continued, "to
question the legality of the mar
riage." ' '
Still, Grady Blackburn, 22, and
Mary Jane Poplin, 17, of Roaring
River. N.C. who were married
Dec. 4, by Miss Foster, weren't
taking any chances. They decided
!o go through the ceremony again
This time before Justice of the
Peace C. W. Hanes.

Tons Of Berries
To Be Destroyed
SAN FRANCISCO (API Nearly
21 tons of Oregon cranberries
seized in the prc-Thanksgiving
cranberry scare, were ordered
destroyed Monday by Federal
Judge Lloyd II. Burke.
They will he bulldozed into the
ground Wednesday In an open
field near Modesto, where they
were impounded in the Merchants
Refrigerating Co. warehouse.
The 41.599 pounds were found
to he contaminated with aminotri
nzole. a weed killer that produced
cancer in rats. They were the only
cranberries seized in California
during the scare.
Safety Drive
Scheduled
SALEM (AP) A statewide
marine safely campaign will be
conducted next year by the Ore
gon Federation of Boating Clubs.
At its annual meeting here the
group, composed of 23 clubs, voted
to support the new State Marine
Board in enforcement of the boat
ing law passed by the last Legislature.
Stale Marine Director Robert F,
Rittenhouse told members
"Actually there are no real
hazards in boating as long as
people practice safety. This year
23 persons lost their lives in Ore
gon boating accidents, every one
or which could have been pre
vented if the boaters had been
reasonably careful."
He urged a strong statewide
safety campaign.
The federation reelected Frank
O. Collins of Portland president.
Howard S. Walker of Coos Bay
was named vice president and
Dave Jensen of Hood River, secretary-treasurer.

some of the seven groups of Indi
ans who won court suits against
the government.
Some 2.000 Indians will get 3
million dollars awarded in 11)50-51
by the Court of Claims as com
pensation for land taken by the
government.
Adults of these Indian groups
will be paid first: Alsea Band of
Tillamooks, Coquille, Chctco, Con
federated Bands of Umpqua and
Calapooya Tribes, and Too-Too-
Nays.
A judgment also has been
awarded the Molalla Band, Scaton
said. Members will be paid after
a roll call has been completed.
Charges Filed
Against Pair
PORTLAND (AP) Federal
charges have been filed here
against two men in the Dec. 7
burglary of the Washington Fed
eral Savings & Loan Assn. of
Hillsboro and Tigard, southwest of
here.
Special FBI agent Joseph E.
Thornton said one of them, Guy
Bernard Groupet, 22, of Seattle,
still is at large. The other, Robert
Franklin Knox, 24, of Estacada,
Ore., is in custody.
Knox was arraigned Monday
before U.S. Commissioner Claire
Mundorff, -who set bail at $10,000
after Knox had waived prelimi
nary hearing.
Burglars forced their way into
the bank building with a crowbar
and broke open the safe, taking
some $2,000 in cash and nearly
$1,000 in checks, it was one of
four burglaries in the same area
that night.
HOT BITE
LIMA, Ohio IT) Ohio Power
Company officials had little diffi
culty determining what time a rac
coon wandered into a substation in
nearby Lafayette. Every electric
clock in the eastern half of Allen
County slopped at 3:18 a.m. The
raccoon's charred body was found
under the power lines it had short
circuited in the substation.
Bend, was driving home from
Bums and saw the accident.
He said the Rev. Dr. Moore's
car skidded onto the right shoul
der of the road, traveled along
it about 250 feet, swerved to the
left side, then rolled several times
end-over-end.
Packages containing Christmas
gifts the Moores had taken along
were strewn around the accident
scene.
Witnesses said a small golden-
colored pet spaniel leaped from
the wreckage and bounded away
into sagebrush. Police and others
were unable to .find it.
Two years ago the Rev. Dr.
Moore and his wife took a, 10-
week trip around the world. It was
a gift of appreciation from mem
bers of his congregation.
The deaths increased Oregon's
traffic fatality toll for the year
to 477 and for December to 36, in
the Associated Press tabulation.
