National Demo Committee To Discuss '60 Conclave
WASHINGTON (AP) - The
Democratic National Committee
w ill meet here Jan. 22 to discuss
I960 national convention and cam
paign plans.
While the meeting's agenda has
yet to be decided, several state
leaders have indicated they will
fight National Chairman Paul M.
Butler's proposal to penalize
states behind in their campaign
donations.
Some committeemen also have
spoken up in favor of the Butler
proposal which would assign con
vention seats and hotel rooms on
the basis of state records of finan
cial support of the National Com
mittee in the 39 months up to
April 1, 1960.
The Democrats have been hav
ing difficulties meeting current
operating expenses at national
headquarters while at the same
time raising money to pay off a
huge deficit from the 1956 cam
paign. Another scrap that may materi
alize at the Jan. 22 meeting is a
proposal which Illinois Commit
teeman Jacob M. Arvey has
promised to put forward which
would give the larger states great
er voice in National Committee
decisions.
Arvey would give each state the
same number of votes in the com
mittee as it has in the national
convention instead of the tradi
tional two votes each. On the basis
of the 10 convention vote appor
tionment, this would give New

Cancer Claims Young 'Nun'
HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) - Four
years ago, when Antoinette Galati
was only 14, she had set her heart
on becoming a Roman Catholic
nun.
Thursday she got her wish.
Antoinette entered Mt. Sacred
Heart Convent here four years
ago and started the long years
of study that end in the nun's
final vows. She realized she would
be 20 before her studies were fin
ished. But last week the girl was
taken sick. Doctors found that
she had cancer. It would take her
life soon, they said. They ar
ranged for an operation, but they
ha'd little hope that it would help.
The doctors operated Thursday
morning. Because the operation
was so delicate, the girl was al
lowed to take her final vows as
a nun beforehand, two years
ahead of time.
When Antoinette came out of
the operating room, she was Sis
ter Mary Benjamin. And a few
hours later the 18-year-old nun
died. She will be buried Saturday
in the Sisters plot at St. Lawrence
Cemetery.
