Students To Enter College
OREGON STATE COLLEGE -An
all-out effort should be made
lo get the "brighter, upper-echelon"
high school graduates who
now don't go lo college to college,
an Oregon State College leader be
lieves. One-half of the "smarter" high
school graduates never go to col
lege. Dr. Vernon H. Cheldelin, direc
tor of OSC's Science Research In
stitute, said this "waste of hu
man talent" could be partially
stopped by an expansion of the na
tional merit scholarship program
and by teacher encouragement.
These students could prepare
themselves for careers in research,
where there will be a glaring per
sonnel shortage, he added.
To adequately educate the stu
dent and to adequately prepare his
high school teacher is the prob
lem, he said.
Although there are many ex
cellent teac he s.raemteobrufh m
cellent teachers, a number of them
who are teaching courses have not
themselves had adequate college
course work, especially in science
and mathematics," Dr. Cheldelin
said.
Dr. Cheldelin insists the public
school system has not deserved
the "whipping received the past

"We need to belter realize what

lem of inadequate subject matter
training, but they are hampered
by inadequate binds, inadequate

classroom."
There will be plenty of jobs open
in research for the well-trained
students, but for the United States
to keep the leadership in tech
nology it must increase its expen
diture on basic research, the OSC
scientist believes.
Basic and long-range research
expenditures need to be doubled
from the present annual 500 m i 1
lion dollars spent by industry and
government, Dr. Cheldelin said.
Only seven cents of the United
States research dollar goes to bas
ic research while Russia spends
14 cents and England spends SO
cents in an effort to regain her
pre-war excellence in science.
"Basic research is to our soci
ety, what seed corn is to the farm
er and what timber stands are to
sustained-yield forestry," Dr. Chel
delin said.
Basic research is simply the ga
thering of fundamental informa
tion about nature and the universe.
It has brought such discoveries
as penicillin and the atomic bomb.

vision 'station WGAN, which is
now under construction here, will
be the world's tallest man-made
structure when completed this fall.
The tower "requires 100 acres of
land because the guy wires must
be so long. It will contain an ele
vator rising lo within 40 feet of the
