Sheriff Fires
Two Deputies
MEMPHIS. Tenn. (AP) - The
sheriff fired two deputies today
after his "pregnant prisoner"
viewed a dramatic midnight line
up of officers at the county jail.
Sherilf M. A. Hinds said the
deputies were intimate with Lela
Fleck, 22, before she was trans
ferred from the jail to the penal
farm.
Mrs. Fleck, formerly ot Long

necessary when bruin . wasn't
about to be trapped.
Borgnis noted that his trapline
was being raided by a bear that
ate whatever in the trap that suit
ed his fancy. This left the trap
without bail or the animals Borg
nis wauled. If a trap closed on
the bear, certified weight 420
pounds, it was shaken off, pulled
off, or carried off. The trapper
couldn't stand for that, the price
of traps being what it is.
He waited at a favored spot
along the line at Ney Springs,
with his deer ride. When the bisi

quest for free bait. Borgnis cut
him down to site with just one
shot.
The animal was in fine shape,
fat, well pelted, and living Ihe life

The bear hunter is the man who
helps keep down the mink popu
lation at the Mount Shasta fish
hatchery. But bear trapping is
not his line. He takes many coy
otes, bob cats, mink, and other
animals of that class. Bear traps,

intends to try trapping them.

headed GM labor relations before
his retirement, had been a long
time friend of Curtice's.

RECORD CLAIM
BRIGHTON, England (AP) -Two

long distance marching record.

Rocket Fails

WASHINGTON (AP) - For the
second day in a row rocket scien
tists failed to release a cloud of
sodium vapor 150 miles above
W:allops Island, Va. The rocket
worked fine, but again the sodium
did not eject as planned.
The same thing happened Thurs
day at dawn when civilian space
scientists lofted a two-stage Nike
Asp rocket to KiO miles, but got
no spectacular cloud of vapor.
Only the first of the series of
three sodium cloud experiments
at dusk Wednesday worked
correctly. That cloud caught the
sunlight above the earth's shadow
and the flare was visible as far
north as Worcester, Mass.
No more sodium rockets are
scheduled at this time at the Na
tional Aeronautics and Space Ad
ministration installation at Wal
lops Island.
Today's rocket reached a height
of 147 miles, NASA said, "but so
dium ejection was not observed.
Cause of the failure was not de
termined." The sodium experiments are
aimed at learning more about
wind currents at high altitudes.
The launchings were among 10
rocket experiments scheduled this
week here and at Cape Canaveral,
Fla., White Sands, N.M., and Ft.
Churchill, Manitoba.

Minister Jawaharlal Nehru today
rejected Chinese Communist Pre
mier Chou En-Lai's Nov. 8 note
demanding a buffer zone along
the Indo-Chinese frontier and an
immediate meeting with Nehru to
settle their border dispute.
Nehru said no meeting could be
held until the Delhi and Peiping
governments had reached some
interim understanding in
cluding the withdrawal of Red
Chinese troops from Indian border
towns and villages.
Nehru's stiffly worded note fol
lowed his statements to the Par
liamentary Consultative Commit
tee in New Delhi Thursday that
any Chinese Communist violations
of the borders of Sikkim and Bhu
tan will be tantamount to war
against India. India is charged
with protecting those two Hima
layan kingdoms.
Nehru said today he shared
Chou's sentiments for friendship
between the two countries b u t
warned, "We have to face the re
alities of the situation and t h e
present situation is such that un
less active efforts arc made by
the governments of India and
China, relations between our two
countries are likely to grow
worse."
In rejecting Chou's call for de
militarizing the McMahon Line
regarded by India as the legal
border between China and India
Nehru suggested instead that bor
der clashes could be eliminated if
neither side sent out forward pa
trols, and said he was instructing
the Indian army to stop patrol

Wanted Man

Akron, Ohio, in a bowling alley
on S.W. Barbur Blvd. here Thursday.
He is Andrew Martin Hoza, 41,
who was picked up on a two-year-old

Ohio to the San Francisco area,
where he lived until coming here
in August.

Fund Lack
Slows Work
PORTLAND AP)-An official
of the Bureau of Public Roads told
the Oregon Assn. of- Counties
Thursday that the interstate high
way construction program may
be slowed because of a lack of
funds.
But, said Baird French, region
al director of the federal agency,
construction of the state's non
interstate highways will continue
at a high level.
Baird said Oregon's interstate
program for construction work on
Highways 30 and 99 will total 55
million dollars in the next fiscal
year, that is down lo million
from the 70 million expected ear
lier.
The association will close its
54th annual convention later to
day with action on resolutions and
election of officers.
