bay.
Whatever the reason, it will be
known as Candlestick Park and,

golfers who have tasted little of
victory's nectar led the way into
today's second round of the $15,-
000 Lafayette Open. But their mar-
vanish by sundown.
Young Jerry Pittman of Tulsa
Okla., 22-year-old one-time Texas
collegiate golf king, and veteran
Bob Watson, 36-year-old home pro
fessional from Ardsley-on-Hudson,
N.Y., each posted 66 Thursday to
share first-round honors.
Their showings clipped five
strokes off par over the 6,700-yard
Oakbourne Country Club course
that took a real beating. No less
than 25 of the 138 entries posted
scores better than the regulation
71.

67, while three others were an

Between them, Pittman and
Watson had won about $2,000 this

of the 1959 tour.
Pittman, who was the Southwest
Conference golf champ while at
Southern Methodist in 1957, came
through with a real flair to tic
for the lead. He holed a chip
shot from 60-feet away on the 18th
green.
Watson's finish was not so spec
tacuiar. He birdicd six holes and
had a bogey on only one.

like a champion. No one can
make you enjoy losing but you
certainly have to be man enough
to accept it.
Personally, I detest a cry-baby
By a cry-baby, I mean the fella
who tries to make excuses for
why he lost.
Most coaches try to guard
their post - game statements so
that they cannot be miscon
strued to the embarrassment of
their squad, ort heir institution.
In my own case, I have done my
best to avoid statements that
are a source of embarrassment
to anyone.
Sometimes it just doesn't seem
to work. It is amazing how the
same facts seen or heard by dif
ferent people can be interpreted
so completely differently. It's
sort of like the blind man who
examined an elephant for the

Dallas and Fort Worth. They
sold me the idea that there
wasn't enough enthusiasm to in
sure success."
Bateson said ho didn't know
whether Ihe Dallas-Fort Worth
section would ever get into the
established major leagues, but
"I'll certainly try to keep my
hands in baseball until that day
comes."
"1 tried. . .and tried hard," he
said, to find someone interested
in the Continental League. "Not
a person in Fort Worth offered
to put a dime into the venture
and we couldn't find any substan
tial financial hacking in Dallas."
The Dallas-Fort Worth franchise
had been touted as an addition
of the Continental League's five
founding cities New York, To
ronto, Denver, Houston and Min-
nenpolis-St. Paul
New York already appropriated
$170,000 to investigate the build
ing possibilities ot a .lO.OOO-scat
stadium for that city's team In
the Continental League.
