New Penicillin
Said Versatile
Against Ills
WASHINGTON AP - The re
cent development of synthetic
penicillin may open the way to
more potent drug weapons against
a variety of maladies, even in
cluding cancer, a scientist said to
day. The possibility was raised by
Dr. Henry Welch, chief of the An
tibiotics Division of the Federal
Food and Drug Administration, in
an address prepared for the
seventh annual symposium on an
tibiotics. Medical scientists from
the United States and 22 foreign
countries are attending.
Through chemical sleight-of-
hand, Dr. Welch said, it might
be possible to take the basic com
ponent of the new man-made pen
icillin and build it into innumer
able substances having the safety
features of penicillin but far more
versatility than it has against
disease germs.
Experimenters already have
thown that various forms of the
new synthetic penicillin can be
made by altering the "side-chain
attached to the basic structure, Dr.
Welch said.
"Perhaps here we have a key
that in the near future may open
the door to a broad-spectrum pen
icillin, to antifungal penicillins,
antiviral penicillins or even to
penicillins active against tumor
cells by the correct manipulation
of the 'guiding side chain,' " he
added.
Expanding in an interview,
Welch said it might be possible
to link the basic structure of the
synthetic penicillins to certain
chemical components of some of
the newer and more versatile na
tural antibiotics.
These newer drugs, he said, at
tack more and different varieties
of germs than any of the penicil
lins but all can produce unde
sirable side effects. Conceivably,
he said, the undesirable charac
teristics of the newer drugs could
be eliminated by linking them
with the new penicillin base.
A number of antibiotics hav
been developed which can fight
cancer cells, but most of them
are far too toxic to use, Welch
said. He added that if the cancer-
attacking component of such drug
by combination with a synthetic
penicillin base, it might then be
possible to give patients large
quantities of such drugs without
causing harm.

year Navy enlistment, he sailed
for Tahiti June 4, the day after
he got his discharge at Los An
geles.
This time he was on his own 20-
foot sloop, the Craig J. He was
alone. He made it to Tahiti in 144
days.
He plans to sail from here for
Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand and
perhaps Australia. ,

British Wartime General Criticizes Ike

Eisenhower never had a golf club
in his hands from the start of
the invasion of Europe until the
defeat of Germany, the White
House says.
Eisenhower was Supreme Allied
Commander in Europe at the
time.
In a book published Monday.
Viscount Alanbrooke, wartime
chief of the British general staff,
criticized Eisenhower's leadership
during the period before the criti
cal Battle of the Bulge in Novem
ber 1944.
Alanbrooke wrote that there was
a "very unsatisfactory state of af
fairs in France with no one run
ning the land battle. Eisenhower,
though supposed to be doing so,
was on the golf links at Rheims
Neuropsychiatry Director
Gives Views Of Criminals
PHILADELPHIA (AP) Por
trait of a criminal:
Emotionally immature, aggres
sive, impulsive.
These are certain character
traits common to almost all
criminals says Dr. John G. Tor
ney, a psychiatrist and director
of the neuropsychiatric division of
Quarter Sessions Court here.
Dr. Torney has examined over
4,000 criminals since W53.
"Almost all criminals are emo
tionally immature," says Dr.
Torney. "They approach adult
situations in a childish way,
"When a child wants something
he cries until he gets it. When a
criminal wants something, he uses
whatever means, are most readily
available. He is-not willing to put
off satisfaction of the need until
it can be done in a socially
accepted way."
On aggressiveness, Dr. Torney
says:
"Criminals have no respect for
the rights of others. They think
only of themselves and they often
become violent when they can't
have everything their own way."
The third character trait, im
pulsiveness, means criminals act
without thinking of the ' con
sequences to themselves or to
others, explains Dr. Torney.
Dr. Torney said that criminals
behave the way they do because
they have not developed the social
controls necessary to avoid crime.
He said that most of the time this
is because of environmental in
fluences the home and the
school.
"Sometimes the battle to instill
social responsibility in a child
may be lost by the time the child
is nine years old," declares Dr.
Torney.
"In too many cases we have
found that a person behaves in a
criminal manner because he was
allowed to grow up willful, selfish
and unrestrained and not because
he is insane or mentally impaired
in some other way.
"If we made parents do their
job properly by punishing them
for their failures there would be
fewer criminals."

Eisenhower made no reply to
the charge, and at first his press
secretary, James C. Hagerty, said

a reporter had checked into the
matter and found that Eisenhower
played very little golf during the

Hagerty hesitated, then said:
"Well, I think I can say this:
