Being Jammed
By Russians
WASHINGTON (API-Washing
ton monitors reported today the
Soviets apparently have turned on
their radio jammers against the
Voice of America's broadcasts of
the Langelle affair.
Russell A. Langelle is the U.S
diplomat whom the Reds kicked
out of the Soviet Union last
weekend, savin? they caught him
in spy work. The United States
has denied the spy accusations.
Langelle, who had been top se
curity officer at the American
Embassy in Moscow, is now on
his way back to Washington with
his family amid protests and
counter-protests between the two
capitals.
Soviet jamming of the Voice of
America's Russian-language pro
grams stopped for the first time
in a decade when Fremier Nikita
Khrushchev visited the United
States .last month. It has been
sporadic since.
The story was published today
for the first time in the Soviet
Union, in a brief account by the
Soviet news agency Tass. It brief
ly outlined the charges against
Langelle and made no mention of
the U.S. version of the incident.
The U.S. version is that Lan-
pclle was seized last Friday by
five Soviets in civilian clothes as
he alighted from a bus near the
embassy who took him to a near
by building, and questioned and
threatened him for several hours.

Langelle, on his way back to
Washington, said in Amsterdam
Monday night he got "pretty
rough treatment" from the So
viets. He didn't elaborate.
The version of the incident re
ported by Soviet newspaper
sources is that passengers on the
bus seized two men after one
handed the other a large package
tlist appeared to contain money.
Authorities found one man, a So
viet citizen, had a package con
taining 20,000 rubles (about $5,000 1
and material for making secret
inks. The other, Langelle, volun
tarily handed over a notebook
containing secret data written in
invisible ink.

NEW YORK (AP)-lf you're 15
to 20 pounds underweight, you
are likely to live longer than peo
pie of average weight and a lot
longer than people who are over
weight.
This was one of the conclusions
of a four-year study by the Society
or Actuaries which .Monday is
sued the first insurance industry
report of its kind in 30 years.
The survey also developed new
average weight charts to replace
those they have been used in doc
tors' offices and on weighing ma
chines since 1029. The charts indi
cate men are considerably beefier
than they used to be and women
more slender.
The study cost 2Vi million dol
lars. It involved five million
Americans.
Other findings of the study:
Women are healthier than men.
Women carry high blood pres
sure and additional weight with
less risk.
Extreme underweight 40
pounds or so below average-
sometimes carries a higher mor
tality rate than overweight.
Overweight persons who reduce
gain in life expectancy as long as
they keep their weight down.
The mortality rate for women
has declined much more than for
men. '
There is some advantage in
slight overweight for teen-agers.

Health Code
Hearing Set
The public is invited to partici
pate in a hearing in Klamath
Falls November 18 to debate the
health code portion of the state's
new migrant labor law.
The hearing, to be conducted
from 1 to 4 p.m. in the county
courthouse, will give farmers and
others interested a chance to tes
tify, the Slate Board of Health
announced.
The farm migrant labor act was
passed by the State Legislator
this year and became law when
signed by the governor several
months ago. But it -won't become
fully in effect until final accep
lance of the health code and cm
ployment of staff, the board said.
Included in the proposed code
are standards for farm labor
camps covering shelter, food serv
ice, water supply, toilet facili
ties, "refuse disposal and rodent,
insect and disease control.
Other hearings arc scheduled at
Greshain, Hood River, Salem,
Hillsboro. Medford, Redmond, The
Dalles, ' Pendleton, Ontario and
Portland.
