Thefts Told
At Crypts
CAIRO IAP) Investigators
have discovered that the Cairo
museum has been systematically
looted ot antique treasures. The
remaining treasures of ancient
Egypt have been sealed, and a
check is being made to determine
how much was stolen.
The robberies came to light
when a touring Soviet professor
noticed that one of King Tut-Ankh-Amen's
scepters was missing
from its display case. He counted
only 10 when the sign said 11.
All points of exit from Egypt
have been alerted against at
tempts to smuggle the sceptre or
any other relics out of the country.
WASHINGTON AP-The steel
industry. it was reliably reported
today, has rejected a suggestion
that it cut steel prices $10 a ton in
lieu of granting a wage increase
in the current strike situation.
The suggestion was made by
Rep. Chester A. Bowles iD-ConnM
in a letter to President Eisen
hower, who in turn had it referred
directly to Chairman Roger
Blough of the U.S. Steel Corp.
Blough is said to have turned
down the idea on the ground that
wnthm in settling the monthlong strike.
the steel companies are going to
have to give the strikers some
sort of wage increase anyway.
So far the industry's position is
that it cannot, in the public in
terest, increase steel labor costs
and thus spur inflation. The strik
ing United Sleelworkers contend
that this is an attempt to reverse
traditional American economic
policy that workers are entitled to
regular sharing in prolits.
Bowles told a reporter if the in
dustry went along with his pro
posals. he felt sure the sleelwork
ers union would have to abandon
its wage increase demands in the
public interest. Bowles was the
government's World War 1,1 price
administrator.
"The effect oi a steel price cut
would help the entire economy,"
Bowles said. "It would probably
mean that prices of new 1960 auto
mobiles would have to be lower
too.
"We've just gotten out of the
habit of cutting prices. But once
started the idea would catch on."
With steel negotiations conlinu
ing in a complete stalemate in
New York, other facets of the situ
ation became known.
1. The administration has no in
tention of invoking the Taft-Hart
ley law's national emergency pro
visions at least until Sept. 15 or

2. Secretary of Labor James P
Mitchell, who is studying the
strike situation as a fact-finder for

companies and striking union..
3. The union is convinced that
with no settlement likely the gov
ernment soon will have to inter
vene, either by invoking Taft-Hartley
or other methods.
4. U.S. Steel revealed it has sent
out a statement to striking em
ployes saying the union has exag
gerated the effect of steel man
agement proposals to change work
rules. U.S. Steel's statement said
that from 1940 through 1958 its
worker employment costs have
risen 288 per cent while shipments
of steel products increased only
30 per cent.
S. In reply the union said the
work rules couldn't be too much
of a problem at U.S. Steel because
there have been only 135 cases in
volving work rules in U.S. Steel
grievance procedures since 1947,
Out of the 135 cases, the union
said, the company won all but 23
in arbitration. Also, the union said

from $1.47 in 1957 to $2.28 in 1959,
