Staley, Lovn Sox' Anchors;
Chicago Solid Flag Choice
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
At the start of the year the Chi
cago White Sox were given an out
lide chance at the pennant be
cause of only one thing their
itrong pitching staff.
Today the first-place While Sox
are a slid favorite to represent
the American League in the World
Series despite their pitching.
Only Early Wynn of the highly
touted Big Five Billy Pierce,
Dick Donovan, Ray Moore, Barry
Lalman and Wynn has been
pitching as advertised. He has a
15-7 record.
Pierce is 12-12. Donovan,
plagued by arm miseries is 7-5
and hasn't pitched since July 21.
Moore is 2-6 and Latman 5-4.
What's keeping them up there,
then? The answer lies in their
speed, their defense, their ability
to win the close games and their
bullpen aces Gerry Staley ' and
Turk Lown.
Staley and Lown figured prom
inently in Wednesday's 11-6 tri
umph over Detroit which kept the
Sox 2V4 games ahead of Cleve
land, a 9-5 winner over Kansas
City. Boston defeated Baltimore

fourth when Detroit scored four
times to overcome a 3-0 Chicago
lead. Staley halted the Tigers and
picked up his fifth relief victory
when the While Sox scored eight
runs in the fifth and sixth on only
three hits. Sherm Lollar's three-
run homer was the big blow. Lown
pitched the last three innings.

Insemar sins for the defense.
Kearns declined to identify for
the press the "very important
Canadian and American inter
ests" he says will put up the
guarantee but predicted a Moore
Johansson light would draw a
three million dollar gate.
"Certainly I'd like to fish! Jo
hansson." Moore said, "but right
now 1 want to get busy with
South American fights. Ves, 1
may make a defense down
there."
Another successful defense
would break the record he
equalled Wednesday night before
11.555 at the Montreal Korum.
where his eighth defense tied the
175 pound division's mark set by
Maxie Kosenbloom.
Archie stretched his all-time,
all-division knockout record to 128
Wednesday night when he floored
29-year-old Durelle four times in
the third round for a kayo that
was counted out by referee Jack
Sharkey with heartbroken Do
relle Hat on his back.
Moore, weighing 174L4 pounds
for their return title tight, shook
up the British Empire champion
seven times in the first round
with sneaker rights and one left
right combination. And Archie
had the better of the hard
ing in the second
though one of
fight-
session, al-
thc three judges
thought Durelle won that round.
But when the mustachioed and
five-day-bearded champion went
in the third session, a quick fin
ish was apparent. Body smashes
almost doubled Yvon. Then the
head attack had hun reeling un
til, a right to the chin dropped
him to one knee for a count of
nine.
Again Moore went alter him
and sent him slithering down the
ropes with a right-left for another
nine-count. Shortly afterward an
other right to the face sent Yvon
half through the ropes and down
on the canvas for a count of six
A final right sent him flat on his
back for the full count. He was
bleeding profusely from his nosa
and mouth.
Promoter Eddie Quinn an
nounced the gross gate as $140,519
and the net gate at $122,627. In
addition, the telecast to the Unit
ed Stales brought $125,000 fee.
There was no television in Can
ada. Moore's $175,000 guaranlee was
against 40 per cent of the net
gate and TV money, totalling
only about $118,050. He'll take the
guarantee. Durelle was guaran
teed $15,000 against 20 per cent
of gate and TV, only if Moore's
percentages equalled Moore's
guarantee. Durelle will receive
only his $15,000.

3500 Wins
Credited
To Shoe
CHICAGO (AP)-"I don't keep
track of such things," said jockey
Willie Shoemaker after ' entering
the winner's circle for the 3,500th
time.
A week before his 28th birthday,
Showmaker Wednesday became
one of a select group of jockeys
who have booted home 3,500 or
more winners.
He had been riding the last
three days in Arlington Park with
a foot injury suffered in the start
ing gate last Saturday. He was
blanked Monday, won Tuesday's
opener but missed the rest of the
afternoon.
The Shoe, who won his first race
at Golden Gate Fields in
California on April 20, 1949,
reached 3,500 in Wednesday's sec
ond race with Mad Duchess.
In boosting his total to 3,500,
Shoemaker ran his year's winners
to 227 in a strong bid for his fifth
national riding championship. He
Is four ahead of his chief rival
Boh Usserv. who is riding at
Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
After scoring his 3,500th victory,
Shoemaker said:
"I really didn't know I was so
close to it until I read it in the
papers the other day. I just don't
keep track of those things. I knew
I had something over 3.000 but not
how many more."
Since the 4 feet lOMi inch, 101
oniind Shoemaker tasted his first
victory, aboard Shafter V for
$21 payoff, he has had 13,751
mounts and his horses have won
close to $18,800,000.

Moore, who looks like Shake
spear's Othello but prefers to
paraphrase Aesop, declared his
third round knockout of Canadian
challenger Yvon Durelle Wednes
day night was a mismatch.
"Aesop says never put a mule
in a race at Santa Anita," Archie
said as he inched his way through
his crammed dressing room.
Moore, who got off the deck four
times last December to score an
11th round kayo over Durelle
said, "I don't remember what
punch' it was" that put Durelle
down for the fourth and final

televised bout.

spelled the beginning of the end

Durelle, who sobbed uncontrol-
ably in his dressing room, la
mented the fact that "1 could
never get that big right hand

Durelle insisted that Moore
"was no better" than he was last
December when he kayoed Du

"He just nailed me. I was too
weak. I got licked by a better
man," were Durelle's comments.

Milwaukee's Braves may not be
the all-conquering champions they

Eddie powered two home runs

added a home run, his 301 h, and a
triple and Joe Adcock hit safely
in his 19th consecutive game. The
Braves also got a fine pitching
performance from veteran Bob
Rush, who hurled scoreless ball
