LONDON' (NBA' "Arc (hey
trying to kill off tlie Queen?"
I wrote fix weeks na at the
start of Queen Elizabeth's 15,0:io
mile tour'of Canada.
. I was rererrins to the crowd
ed program that Her Majesty was
supposed to carry out at break
reck speed,
The Queen's Canadian it inei
nry read morelike the work of
would-be resicides than of loyal
Commonwealth ministers solici
tous of their sovereign's health
and happiness, I wrote.
Today, it appears my concern
was well founded. Not only is
Her Majesty ill. hut she is re
turning to England with Prince
Philip earlier than anticipated,
Indisposed with an upset stom
ach, she was forced to lop. two
days off of her Yukon lour. Now
the Queen and Prince Philip are
shortening. (heir .Jour even further
by flying home! instead of ret in n
ing in the royal yacht Britannia.
Anxiety to see ' their children
Is the official reason given for
the sudden curtailment of the roy
al tour. This excuse fools no one
here.
One only has to talk, to' those
who have accompanied the Queerr.
or to look at the photos of her
taken during the tour to get some
idea of the terrible strain she has
been under. ;'.'' . i
The photos' show her face linecf
with fatigue'; "the result of 10 hours
a day fulfilling official engage-,
menls. ' .
Those little puffs underneath 'the
eyes are the ' result of sleepless
nights in trains, planes and aboard
the royal yacht.-
Some idea of the Queen's or
deal may be gained from the toll
of sickness among members of
the official party. Several of her
entourage, worn out by. thousand
of miles of travel and irregular
meals, now have minor illnesses.
The same is true of tiie press
v - is W
.corps that has accompanied Ihe
VJliVt.1.
. After her recent stomach upset
the Queen appeared in public
more heavily matte-up lhan usual
an ohvious effort to hide the pale
ness of her complexion.' .
The state of Elizabeth's health
is causing lively concern anion;
licr subjects tiere. The Daily Ex
press describes her as carrying
out "one of the toughest jobs
faced by any woman today,"
while tne .Manchester Guardian
calls for re thinking in the' plan
ning of royal tours.
The Daily Telegraph publishes
letters protesting against the
Queen's "impossihly overloaded"
schedule. One reader warns. "We
shall earn the contempt of' such
warm-hearted and loyal peoples
as the Dutch and Ihe Danes, who
know how to allow human rights
to their sovereigns."
' At home there apparently '-will
be no let-up in the official engagc
merits for the Queen and Prince
Philip. They are leaving for a
tour of the Orkney, and Shetland
islands early in August. After a
short rest comes a Slate visit to
the newest Commonwealth mem
ber, Ghana.
One suggestion to lighten the
Queen's- burden is that she make
her visits to Commonwealth coun
tries shorter, and- combine duly
with pleasure.
' For example.' on one visit to
Canada she might take a re.i)'
vacation in the Rockies and visit
a few towns in Alberta and Brit
ish Columbia. 'On. her next, visit
she could' confine herself to Que
bec and Montreal Without setting
a foot in wesl'ern Canada.

The buried treasure of Tumwater
Before the turn of the century, buried treasure was discovered at
the little town of Tumwater in Washington State. The treasure
was water! A most unusual water. A water so fresh and pure that it
was naturally perfect for brewing just as it flowed from the earth.
It was here that the Olympia -Brewing Company was founded. And
today, over sixty years later, the water continues to flow in
unlimited quantity from deep artesian wells with the precise character
. for perfect brewing. Rarely, in all the world, has such a water
been discovered. It is this extraordinary brewing water that
blends in and brings out the more delicate flavors
of choice hops and grains . . . creating a
refreshingly different beer of unchanging
, excellence and rare good taste.
