New Era Promised By Bell
WASHINGTON' AP) Fans
hae been promised a new era
in sports: More major leasues (or
both football and baseball, bring
ing the pros to almost every sec
tion of the country.
Football was added to the prom
ise Tuesday when Commissioner
Bert Bell of the National Football
League reported that a rival loop

"The more teams and the more

planned to be in business bv 1961
Bell gave out word about the
new football league while testify

oly subcommittee. He spoke in fa
vor of legislation that would ex
empt some aspects of professional
looioan, baseball, basketball and
hockey from the antitrust laws.
The committee hears Ford
Kruk, commissioner of baseball,
on the same matter today.
Only skimpy details about the
new league were revealed by Bell,
who said he planned to meet to
day with three linancial backers.
The meeting would be either m
Philadelphia or Atlantic City, Bell
said.
The commissioner, talking to
newsmen after the hearings, said
Houston, Denver and Minneapolis
surely would have teams in the
league. He added that Dallas, New

Sendoff Planned For Little Leaguers
The Klamath Falls Little League
All-Stars, the sub-district 3 en
trants hi the district playoffs
scheduled for Portland's new Fair
view Field Friday and Saturday
will leave Klamath Falls at 7:30
a.m. Thursday. Their place of de
parture is the Klamath Falls City
Hall.
It is hoped that a large group
of Klamath baseball fans will turn
out to give the youngsters a pro
per sendoff.
The venture, which includes
semifinal berth in games slated
for 5:30 p.m. Friday at Fairview,
and a possible district champion-
snip slot on Saturday, is the
first for a Klamath Falls area
Little League team.
The end of the 1959 regular
league season on the local front
qualified the KF Stars for the
right to enter competition on the
national tournament level.
National Association rules pre
vent any league from competing
on the national level until they
have completed two seasons as
members of the parent organiza
tion. The KF Little League, Inc.
from which this team of All-Stars
was selected became eligible this
season. The South Suburban Little

BEL AIR. Md. AP Larry
MacPhail, the former baseball
magnate who once advocated four
major leagues, says the current
plan to form a third one is
silly."
MacPhail, 69, who turned to
raising race horses and cattle on
his Maryland farm after retiring
as New York Yankee president in
1947, gave a typically frank ap
praisal of the new league's pros
pects Tuesday night. He spoke up
when asked about speculation that
he would be president of the Con
tinental League being formed by
a group headed by New Y'ork law
yer William Shea.
Discounting such speculation, he
expressed doubt that any such in
dependently born league could at
tain real major league status.
"It's silly to try to do that, ir
my opinion."
Eighteen months ago MacPhail
broke a 10-year silence on public
statements about baseball to criti
cize the National League's ap
proval of moving the New York
Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers to
the West Coast.
He said at that time he had
favored working toward four ma
jor leagues as early as 1947 by
letting the Pacific Coast League
start on its way toward a third
major league. His idea also called
for the eventual merger of the
American Assn. and International
League into a fourth major circuit.
But two key cities of the old
Pacific Coast League, Los Ange
les and San Francisco, have since
been absorbed by the National
League.
"Now there are still eight or
ten cities which deserve and could
support major baseball and it
seems to me the best way to give
it to them would be by expanding
the two existing leagues," said
MacPhail.
MacPhail, who also served as
general manager of the Brooklyn
Dodgers during his baseball hey
day, emphasized that his remarks
were intended only to point up
the "terrific problems" faced by
the Shea group.
"Where are they going to get
Ihe ballplayers? Where are they
going lo get the ballparks?" he
asked.
"As for being president of a
new league, the horses and cattle
are enough lo keep me busy right
now."
Moore, manager and coaches, in

were selected for the team off
their performances during the reg
ular season while competing on
their respective teams.
The team, which has been hold
ing two practices daily since the
close of regular season play, one
at 7:30 a.m. and at 5:30 p.m.
on the Mills Park diamond, will
wrap up their training schedule
today except for a light drill Fri
