Luxury Spending Which
Cuts Into Education Idea
By GAY PAULEY
L'PI Women's Editor
NEW YORK iUPl-A woman
president of a college today
charged families with spending
for the luxuries of a new car or
television set and shorting the
kids on (lie luxury ol a . good
education.
Milliccnt Carey Mcintosh, the
outspoken president of Rarnaid
College lor Women, spoke out lor
an "educational revolution which
would change U.S. spending hab
its on schooling.
She said that indirectly it is
the teacher, settling for a low
salary, who is paying for the
luxuries of the families she
serves.
"Nearly every independent day
school and many independent col
leges are afraid lo raise tuition
to meet what education should
cost lor fear of pricing (hem
selves out of the market," she
said. "But the parents (whose
children arci in tRc.se same
schools and colleges are willing
to pay more than twice what
they did in 1939 for automobiles,
electrical appliances and other

high standard of living.".
They will . borrow money lo
buy a house or a .car, hut are
horrilicd if it is suggested that
they take out a loan for a col
lege education."
Mrs. Mcintosh's sland is spelled
out in a signed article in Bar
nard s- current alumnae maga
zine.
She said what is needed is "An
educational revolution ... not in
the curriculum of our schools, al
though clearly much needs to he
changed (and is being changed)
... but in our attitudes toward edu
cation which at best arc . . .- un
realistic."
The president said lhat at I
time when our younger genera
tion Is increasing by leaps and
bounds, the . nation is and will
continue to be faced "with a ma
jor shortage" at all teaching
levels.
"Most Americans will agree
that the situation is deplorable,"
she wrote, "but they go on hon
ing that somehow the teachers

One solution la the increased
tuition, she said. But she sug
gested that "long range financ
ing" is up to the parents.
The "ideal" she said would be
to lake out college insurance at
the birth of a child, lo start a
special savings accounts to cov
er education cost, or to make
long term loans" either for par
ents or students.
She tiled this statistic to show
the cost of education is small
when considered in terms of re
turn on investment. One recent
study showed the "Current col
