sure sounds like pennant music to
the Dodgers' ears.
Standing up at the plate against
the side-arming Drysdale is like
facing a firing squad without a
blindfold, according to National
League hitters.
The six-foot, five-inch Los. An
geles right-hander is sheer mur
der on right-handed batters when
he fires those sizzling fast balls
at them by way of third base.
Some of those hitters don't seem
to know whether to wince or

the 22-ycar-old Drysdale doubled

two runs in the seventh. The loss
was Friend's 11th in 15 decisions
The Chicago Cubs tightened

5-2 victory over the Milwaukee
Braves and the Cincinnati Reds
defeated the St, Louis Cardinals,
11-5. Rain caused postponement
of the San Francisco-Philadelphia
game.
In the American League, Wash

dropped Detroit to sixth by beat
ing the tigers, 3 0. in a game
limited to five innings by rain.
The rain also washed out a dou-

Sept. 22 at Yankee Stadium.
He added that the stadium
could accommodate 80.000 for a
sellout 3 million dollar gate.
The slender young promoter
disclosed his plans today while
discussing "somewhat exaggerat
ed stories" from Los Angeles
earlier in the week. Those stories
indicated that the big fight would
be held in the City of Angels.
'Let me, clear the air right

colnesque Bill. "I hope to stage
the Johansson-Patterson fight at
Yankee Stadium on Sept. 22, a
Tuesday with rain dates on Sept.
23 and 24. And I can think of
nothing that will prevent it."

October, then he might shift it to

holes, however, McKendrick drove
behind some trees and was unable

Porterfield. battling back from
a one-hole deficit at the halfway
mark, took his one-hole lead for
good on the 32nd. Oldficld. who
was 26 on Wednesday, missed two
dim chances to tie the match. The
first, on the 35th. saw the Astoria
man's seven-foot put rim the cun
while on the 3(ilh and linal hole.
Oldfield s second shot overshot the
green after Porlerfield's second
drive had landed at the base of
the green.
The Grants Pass vet chipped
beautifully to within one foot of
the cup on his third shot and Old
field, under tremendous pressure
with a difficult shot, stroked the
ball past the pin on his third shot,
giving the match to Porterfield.

How much city driving do you do in a day? Lee llamer and Charlie
Martin completed 827 miles of steady driving in 24 hours without
leaving Los Angeles.
Lee Hamer got tired or hearing gas mileage claims from people who
kept track only when driving in the open country, lie inveigled his
good friend Charlie Martin into making the exhausting run with him
. . , 24 hours of steady city driving.
The Volvo gas tank holds only 91 gallons so with the assistance of the
(ieneral Petroleum Corporation, an auxiliary lank was stored in the
trunk. They fixed up an electric fuel switch which they pulled when
I heir car, a Swedish Volvo, began to sputter.
To keep everything on the up and up, Mobilgas executive, Leon Wil
son, supervised the sealing of the tank and the refilling at the run's
end to assess the gas mileage.
The four cylinder Volvo averaged 38.11 miles per gallon. Less than
Iwcnty-two gallons of Mobilgas was needed to cover the 827 miles.
One other interesting statistic was revealed. Hamer and Martin each
dropped four pounds during the day and night drive.
