Thief With Keen Mind, Charge Names

LOS ANGELKS (AP)-At 24 a
euccess, by some standards, he
wanted to start over to turn the
page and become an entirely new
person.
That's why he worked so hard
at his adopted trade burglary
says Gordon Kllis Atteberry.
He was good at it. He says he
carried off more than 200 burg
laries, which netted him $100,000
or more. He kept three luxurious
apartments at ouce. He eluded of-
Iicers in almost 48 states, Canada
and Mexico.
When caught, he was dropping
nis last nickel in a Reno, Nev.,
parking meter.
All through his months of" ex
citing flight from one police trap
to another, the keen-minded law-
breaker kept trying to figure him
self out.
"I want to see what makes me
tick," he said Wednesday on re
turning to Los Angeles. . .
Atteherry worked successfully
as a professional hypnotist, actor,
writer and photographer of nudes.
He studied engineering at the Uni
versities of Colorado and Wiscon
sin. He's described as an expert
at Electronics,
Still there was something lack
ing in his life. .
"I planned to reduce my age by
five years, assume a new identity
and eventually enter the Univer
sity of Florida as a premedical
student majoring in psychology,"
he says.
So he became a burglar.
"I'd been capering (committing
burglaries) for at least five or six
months," he said. "I averaged
four or five jobs a night, very
seldom ever taking a night off.
I averaged in money about $100
a night."

They got onto him after a hus
band complained Atteberry was
stealing his wife.
His confession is sprinkled with
hair-raising escapes. In Kansas he
shot a policeman "to scare him'
and swam the Missouri River,
then hid in a hollow log for 8 or
10 hours. In Reno he said he de
cided it would be easy to blow up
the jail but he refrained. In
Montana he bluffed through a
roadblock. In New England he
"pulled a few jobs." He put 40,-
000 miles on a car he stole in
Hollywood.
He was ordered held (or pre
liminary hearing in lieu of $105,
00" bail. He professed to be glad
he'd been caught.
'I want to find myself so I can
operate successfully in society,
and relate myself to society, he
said. "Perhaps I can make a few
white marks to offset the black
ones."
Said Detective Sgt. Tom L. Rog
ers, who rode with him from
Reno to Los Angeles:
"He's always analyzing him
self."

Jack Henley Wednesday night
said the Oregon Centennial wagon
train trespassed on his property.
He swore out a warrant for the
arrest of the train's leader,
Henley appeared before Justice
of the Peace Lynn Sherman in
King Hill, Idaho, made his com
plaint and the warrant was sworn
out. The warrant bore only the
name John Doe.
The justice later said that Hen
ley told him the wagon train
camped Wednesday night on his
property without permission.
.A sheriff's deputy was given the
warrant to serve on the leader of
the train. There was no immed
iate indication when it would be
served.
Henley later told newsmen:
"They've got a full camp around
a tenant house on my property.
No one asked my permission.
They just moved in and took
possession."
The train camped Wednesday
night between Glenns Ferry and
Mountain Home, about 40 iijiles
south of here. The wagons were
scheduled to move into Mountain
Home for a civic celebration to
day. ,
The seven wagons and the 27
persons making the trip are en
route from Independence, Mo., to
Independence, Ore., as part of
Oregon's Centennial celebration.
