Shows Reds Close Behind

Many of the visitors to the So
viet science display look at it in
puzzlement, concluding that it is
either a small rocket, an atom
, bomb or a hot water healer.
It is labeled mysteriously a
1 spontaneous fission counter."
Dr. Lyle Rorst. New York Uni
versity nuclear physicist, was ask
ed by The Associated Press for
an evaluation of the Soviet Scien
tific and Technological Exhibit.
He singled out the strange-looking
invention. It is, he said, one
of the few original pieces of So
viet research at the science exhi
bition. The Soviet exhibitor, a scientist,
explained that the device mea
sured the rale in which atoms of
uranium split all by themselves.
The figures he quoted raised
Borst's eyebrows.

energy is converted into electricity
by the device.

operating.

present. The United States has
more scientific irons in the fire.
It won't be long. Borst esti
mated, before the Soviet Union
equals the United States in quan
tity of science. But with elfort the
United States will keep its leader
ship in scientific quality.
'As far as we saw, fin per cent

treading a path that U.S. science
has already followed," he said.
