A little girl in Chicago looked
at Queen Elizabeth and lamented:
"But mommy, she's not wearing
a long dress."
!A Toronto woman in her 80s
raised an eyebrow at the Queen
in. a cool, gray and white checked
outfit and said with surprise: "She
looks like a little girl."
From the very young to the
very old, Britain's Queen Eliza
beth II is fair game for the fash
ion critics.
Nobody is quite sure what a
10th century Queen should wear.
But getting drama into her day
time dresses seems to be the big
problem.
Pedestrian, girlish, unimagina
tive is the way some newspaper
men and women traveling with the
Queen have described her daytime I
wardrobe in the first weeks of her
tour across Canada." j
They have applauded the gay
colors jade, bright pinks, yellows
and especially becoming turquoise
blues and the glamorous full
skirted "every inch a queen"
evening dresses.
But the shirtwaist type, pleated
skirt, undramatic daytime designs
are criticized as not doing justice
to the attractive 33-year-old 5-foot-
S Queen. Some feel more should
be nvade of the Queen's trim
waistline.
For her Chicago visit, a high
spot of the tour, the Queen step
ped ashore in one of her dressiest
morning costumes and made a hit.
"Overdressed as a tourist, but
not as a Queen," the Chicago Tri
bune commented.
The Queen wore a full-skirted
oyster white lace dress, reim
broidered in shades of brown and
accented with a beige and brown
taffeta cummerbund sash. With it
went a matching wide brimmed
hat, white accessories, a triple
strand of pearls, small pearl ear
rings and a diamond pin at the
left shoulder.
The dress was by Hardy Amies,
who with Norman Hartnell, anoth
er London designer, has provided
the Queen's royal tour clothes,
Her handbag is always one with
straps to be held on her arm so
she can have her hands free for
ceremonial duties.
Her hats have been cloche and to
que styles with organza and
draped chiffon, and some pert
straws. Her shoes, mostly white
and beige on this tour, have been
open-toed and slingbacked, with
moderate heel. As one fashion
writer put it "a bit slocky by cur
rent stiletto standards."
Like any other woman, the
eueen suffers from wind-blown
skirts and hats.
When the Queen's taffeta dress
billowed up above her royal knees
in Toronto, a British newspaper
woman moaned that it had not
been properly weighted and said
with a laugh "heads will roll."
Once, the Queen changed her
hat after a morning of worrisome
wind.
It is reported she gets a choice
of three hats to go with each day
time dress.
In charge of the Queen's ward
robe is .Margaret (Bobol Mac
Donald, a Scotswoman who has
served Elizabeth since childhood
and has the title of her majesty's
"principal dresser."
Aboard the royal yacht Britan
nia the queen gets a chance to re
lax, and she often dons slacks and
sweaters. She has appeared on
deck coming into port with a ker
chief about her head and wearing
dark sunglasses.
The Queen's clothes in no way
affect her popularity. But there
are many who wish she could get
more movie-star glamor out of
them.
