Mishap Victim
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) A
high-altitude balloonist who pio
neered in the space age became
one of its first casualties Monday.
M. Lee Lewis, 48, who oncej
unared the manned balloon altitude
record, was killed standing in an
open - basket gondola just three
feet above ground.
He was hit by a 15-pound steel
pulley that fell 65 feet while
Lewis was testing the gondola's
(lability.
Lewis had been flight engineer
for Winzen Research, Inc., of
Minneapolis since he left the
Navy two years ago.
With partner Malcolm Ross, a
naval commander, Lewis hit 76.
(100 feet in a 1956 flight from near
Rapid City, S. D. This was world
record, but was surpassed the
next year by Maj. David Simon
of the Air Force, at 102,000 feet.

Soviet officials did not disclose
how high the animal-bearing mis
sile went, but the Soviet Union
previously claimed one of its one
stage geophysical rockets reached
a record altitude of 294 miles.
The Soviets said the animal shot
reached a great height.
Dr. Khrushchev said ballistic
rockets of various range had long
been used in the U.S.S.R. for
scientific research.

The name Cerebral Palsy means brain
paralysis. It is no respecter of sex and
most cases originate prenatally, during
birth or from three to til months a ter
birth. There are varying degrees of this
condition.
Although some cases experience cer
tain degrees of flaccid paralysis, most
victims of Cerebral Palsy ire spastic.
The spasticity is sometimes local but
more .often effects the voluntary
muscles of the entire body. Many cases
have varying degrees of epileptoid con
vulsions. The minds of some ire ef
fected while others have near normal
mentality. There are seldom two cases
alike or affected to the same degree.
Injury appears to be the most predom

spinal cord and usually begins with
alrophy or wasting ol the small muscles
