Dies At Age 105

Wesley Bcaird, who attracted na
tional attention when he celebrated
his 100th birthday by .getting mar-
.jied, died Sunday at the age of
105.
. Beaird entered the hospital Wed
nesday. Until shortly before his
marriage, he worked for the city
sanitation department.
He called himself "half Irish
'and half Indian", and often brag
ged, "I been chewing tobacco
since I was eight."
He is survived by the widow, who

passed among Southern senators
that the House is unlikely to act
on any civil rights bill in the wan
ing months of this session.
Senate Democratic Leader Lyn
don B. Johnson of Texas wants to
get a bill passed this year. He
obviously doesn't want the party
splitting issue fought out in 1960,
a presidential election year.
While some .Republicans think a
delay until next year in a show
down on the issue might be
politically advantageous, Dirksen
said he thinks there is need for
action now.
Javits denied in a television
program Sunday that there had
been any foot-dragging on the
part of the Republicans in con
nection with civil rights legisla
tion. He said that Republicans will
have to furnish most of the votes
needed for passage of any bill
Keating said on another program
that the Constitutional Rights sub
committee so far "has engaged
in a teeth-pulling ' and stalling
operation."
However, Sen. Olin D. Johnston
(D-SC) said in a Gilbert

traffic accidents had been report

day period which began at 6 p.m

manned roadblocks and stationed
officers at ports of entry on the
major transcontinental highways,
