Ex-Reporter, Companion
On Bicycle Trek To Mexico

his reporting job on the Salem
Statesman a cek ago. Thursday
he and a companion bicycled into
Klamath Falls. Reeves weighs 20
pounds less than he did when he
left.
At that rate he ought to waste
completely away before he gets
hallway on his cycle tour to New
Orleans. But the fact is, Reeves
says he is just getting down to
lighting trim after two and. one
half years at a desk.
Reeves. 24. and Dale Thomas.
26, of Parkdale, attended Oregon
State College together and became
friends. Then; friendship continued
after college, and sometimes they
worked together at resorts.
A couple of months ago they
had a drink together and shared
some talks of archeology. Both
are amateur archcologists. A lei
surely trip to Yucatan. Mexico,
sounded like a ball. The idea grew.
A week ago Friday, they each
piled five-pound sleeping bags,
transistor radios, three changes of .and possible summer work to pick

in Lubbock, Texas. He received from Col. Travis Hoover,
commander of Evans' pilot training group, the Daughters
of the American Colonists award given to the top student
in each training command graduating class. He also re
ceived the commander's trophy. He is the son of Joe Evans
and Mrs. Jerry Van Buskirk.

Thrilling Summer Rally

new record highs in first two
sessions of the second half of 1959
in what Wall Street described as
thrilling summer rally.
Valuation of all listed issues in
the short week which" ended on
Thursday rose $6,500,000,000.
The industrial average closed
the week on its high a record
at 654.76 up 15.51 points and the
65-stock average also broke all
records at 218.92, 70 4.50 points,
each the best gain since April 17.
Railroads reached their best
level since May 22 and closed the
week at their top of 168.92 up
1.75 points on the week and off
less than a point from the year's
high. The utilities average rose
two full points to 88.10 for its best
weekly rise since Jan. 21 when it
was the same and otherwise the
best since Nov. 14, 1958.
Daily average volume for the
four-day week was ' 3,239.305
shares, best since the week ended
May 15. It compared with a daily
average of 2.954,486 shares in the
previous week.
A total of 1,395 issues appeared
on the tape. Of these 921 ad
vanced, 323 declined and 151 held
unchanged. A total of 148 issues
reached new highs for the year
while 56 touched new lows.
Leadership centered on the
highest grade issues on the board.
Steels and motors dominated
Chemicals had some good gains
Individual tires, metals, alumi
nums, drugs, farm implements
and electronics scored wide gains.
American Motors topped the list
with volume of 211,900 shares,
closing the week at 44 up 1.

weekend with Reeves' relatives,

Papers Will Print Until Ink Runs Dry
LONDON AP - The shut
down of Britain's national news
papers set for Monday was avert
ed Saturday.
The .National Society of Opera
tive Printers and Assistants
agreed to let the national news
papers share their remaining
stocks of printing ink. This will
enable the papers to continue pub
lishing austerity-size editions until
at least Wednesday.
