Its been 39 years since the
na,.r. anri Indian, were World

had your own odds hack in April
If you thought they would he this
year. And yet. here is virtually
the halfway point of the campaign
and the Dodgers are the hottest
tram m the NL, while the Indians
stubbornly cling to first place in
the AL.
The Dodgers ran their winning
streak to seven games, longest of
the year in the NL with a 9-4
victory over the Pittsburgh Pi

beating the Boston Red Sox, 5-4

NEW YORK 'API Ingemar
Johansson's brilliant conquest of
the world heavyweight champion
ship has brought a refreshing
change to boxing.
It's as welcome as a cool breeze
on a hot, humid night.
For the first time in years, the
heavyweight champion is a man
who calls his own shots, knows his
own mind, makes decisions and
won't tolerate dictation.
Rocky Marciano and Floyd Pat
terson were gripped in Svengali
trilby relationships by their man
agers, Al Weill and Cus D'Amato.
Rocky resented and finally re
belled against his por(ly man
ager's dictatorial methods and
that finally led to their break.
Patterson, up to now, has ex
pressed gratitude and unswerving
loyalty to D'Amato for guiding
him to the title.
Johansson relies heavily on the
opinions of Edwin Ahlquist, Swed
ish promoter and Dr. Gosta Karls
son, his personal physician. . But
Ingo has the final word.
His father, Jens, a 55-year-old
stonecutter and street laborer, is
listed as his manager in Europe.
Ingemar signed his own contract
in New York for the Patterson
fight after the New York Athletic
Commission refused to , permit
Harry Davidow, a close friend of
D'Amato, to be his 10 per cent
manager.
Johansson said he had to cut In
Davidow to get his chance at the
title. He was delighted when the
commission took him off the spot.
lngemar's independence and
toughness are not evidenced by
his casual, affable exterior.
He came up the hard way. One
of six children of a humble
family, lngo quit school and went
to work on -street construction
gangs at 15. He entered amateur
boxing ahout the same time, and
rose lo his nation's amateur
heavyweight championship at 17.
He became the European heavy
weight champion in 1956, and
three years later won the world
crown.
While he was moving up in the
pro ranks, lngo put his ring earn
ings into an earth-mov ing, gravel
and dirt selling business. As he
moved up m the pro ranks, his
business grew bigger.
But always, he says, "boxing
game first. That's where I got my
