The Yreka City Council elected
him to the post at their regular
evening session, and they also
authorized the purchase of a new
car to be used by his office.
The city council also reached an
agreement with the California Ore
gon Power Company for the re
moval of power poles and trans
mission lines, which are presently
situated in the center of the site
of the Greenhorn Dam. now under
construction. Rights of way and!
easements will be furnished by the!
city, which further agreed to pay
$450 to Copco in costs for moving
the poles, and to jndemnify Copco 1
against any injury to its customers
through power shortage during the
moving.
Three more rights of way from
property owners were accepted by
the council, for further widening
of north Oregon Street.
The city hoard also heard the
proposition to ch'ange zoning on 1
north Main Street, but was tattled
for further consideration.
The council gave its stamp df ap
proval for further Improvements
to the Yreka City Park, which will
include placing of basketball hoops
in the park., the compacting and
kolling of the Little League ball
fir d and the renlarpmonl nr
repair of lights on the tennis 'A.
courts.

cipitation and daily maximum and

Central Oregon boasts several
long time observers. William L.
Dehne, Fremont station. Fort
Rock, was awarded a 40-year pin
in 1958. Phil Brogan. associate ed
itor of the Bend Bulletin, has a
36-year record and presentation of
a 35-year pin was a recent event.
Dehne is first and Brogan second
in Oregon in years of service.

Council approved $97,670 worth of
building permits at its meeting
this week. The permits covered a
new S58.000 Methodist church,
three $12,500 homes in Alpine
Acres subdivision and a number of'
home improvements being made!
by Dunsmuir residents.
Lee Huddle, chairman of the!
.vietnoaist church building com
mittee, asked the council if it
could waive the $152.50 permit fee
for the church.
Howard Jones, city attorney,
who is chairman of the new
church fund committee, pointed
6ut that the council does not have
this option since the code provides
24 years of service on June 1.
The records kept by these ob
servers are on permanent file in
the Rational Weather Archives and
furnish a valuable source of data
for research.

smog has caused sickness or
death in Southern California.

ed that a five-year study he did
lor the California Department of
Public Health failed to indicate
that smog could kill humans.
He added, however, that lung

other ailments should be studied
in relationship to any effect smog
might have on them.
Goldsmith, citing three smog
attacks in the summer and fall
of 1954, said the daily number of
deaths among those over 65 did
not appear to fluctuate during
the attacks, nor did the total
deaths increase including those
due to cardiac or respiratory
causes.
He said a year later that smog
preceded and followed a period
of high temperatures and that
deaths rose during the high tem
perature period and fell with
lower temperatures although
smog remained.
