Klamath Kubs To Meet SV Stars

Th fired-up Klamath Kubs. the
local entries in the Northern Calif
ornia semi-pro baseball league,
take to the road this weekend for
I Sunday meeting with the Scott
Valley Stars on the Stars home
erounds
The Kubs beefed up with a pair
of late-comers, pitchers Wayne
Hironaka and Ed Vegley recently
from college, hold a 1-2 league
record to date after breaking into
the win column for the first time
with a deliberate 4-1 victory over
the sharp Dunsmuir Merchant nine
at Gem last Sunday.
The Kub victory was the result
of an overpowering bat attack
which sent Dun'smuir'i Ronnie Cur
tis, heretofore called the leagues'
wtnnmgest pitcher, to the showers
late in the game. The Kub stickers,
led by pitcher-rightfielder Mike Do
la n and catcher-third sacker Rube
Johnson, who each banged-out
three hits in five trips to the plate.
The club, on an overall team ba
ns averaged slightly less than a
.333 percentage for the day's work,
collecting 12 safe raps in 37 charg
ed at bats.
Of the top six regular Kub play
ers, as shown by statistics, five
are hitting at a better than .383
clip. Floyd Linderman, the power
ful centerfielder. has six lor ten
and a .600. He is closely followed
by state policeman Rube Johnson
who shifted from his chore as
catcher to the third base corner
for the Merchant game. Johnson
has-10 hits in 17 trips for a .588.
Newcomer Butch Dollar, who,
although he had a rough day in
the field in his opening stint at
second base, came through with
two hits in four trips against Duns
muir and holds a .500.
Dolan who handles an outfield
post when not pitching, has four
for ten, and a .400 mark. Dolan
or the clubs onlywinning pitcher
so far, Bob Lawery, will get the
mound assignment Sunday.

Ranged behind Whitt, all with

Worlein has the only triple regis
tered by the Kubs to his credit.
According to manager Whitt. the
club is rapidly reaching the form
originally expected and with the
added power to his pitching staff
-feels that the team will be on top
of the league in a short time.
Current standings show three
teams tied for first place while
the balance of the league is crowd
ed into the second place.

The Klamath Basinettes.. Klam
ath Falls ladies' Softball team.
steps out of character, briefly,
when they play the tlbo Benders,
of the Men's Softball Association
in a benefit game slated for Gem
Stadium Saturday night.
Game time Is 8 o'clock and all
proceeds will go toward helping
the Basinettes on their state tour
nament plans. Admission is 50
cents for adults and 25 cents for
youngsters.
The game, purely an exhibition,
will feature the Elbo Benders
pitcher and catcher swapping sides
with their Basinette counterparts.
Tonight at Eagle Point the Bas
inettes are getting their third
crack at the Rogue Valley Dairy
Maids. Both squads have collect
ed wins in previous meetings this
season.
The lineup for the Elbo Benders
for the Saturday night hassle in

The Medfordites scored first
when centerfielder Wayne Thomp
son got four strikes in the first
inning and ended up blasting a
screamer to deep right center,
good for three bases. He scored
seconds later when Griggs loosed
a wild pitch.
The KF nine tied the count In
the bottom of the fifth when left
fielder Don Gresdel scored after
singling; Gresdel advanced on a
picknlf error by Anderson then
romped home when rightfielder
John Webb followed up with an
other single.
The Medford squad threatened
seriously in the top of the sev
enth when they scored one run off
three singles and a sacrifice.
Two successive strikeouts by
Griggs, however, forced two of
the runners to die on the sacks.
The KF nine roared back for
their two last ditch markers in
the seventh when Webb singled
with two out and Gary Head, who
pinch-batted for Ross Paxton, was
hit by the pitcher, putting two
men on. Herrera came up and
pounded out the fateful rap to
Ragsdale filling the bases and
driving Webb 1. mie with the tie.

They've lost 10 of their last 15
and have been shut out three
times in the last five games. Is
this the beginning of the end to
their hold on the National League
pennant? Or is this just another
of those slumps, such as they had
and shrugged off while winning
the flag the past two years,

Either way, they have only a
half-game edge left from what was
a bulging, 44-game lead a month
ago after dropping a twi-night
doubleheadcr at Los Angeles
Wednesday night. They were
checked on five hits by lefthander
Sandy Koufax while losing the op
ener 10-2. then were blanked on
two hits by Danny McDevitt, an
other lefty, as the Dodgers look
the second game 4 0.
. That put second place San Fran
cisco, a 7-5 winner over Cincinnati,
just one game behind in the "lost"
column and within .009 percentage
pomts of the champs. The sweep
hoisted the Dodgers into fourth
place, one percentage point be
hind Pittsburgh after the Pirates'
5-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Both
the Dodgers and Hues are only
24 games from the top.
As a refresher, the Braves blew
almost all of an 84 game lead
with a 3 8 slump in early Septem
ber before winning the flag in
1957. Last year they dropped nine
of 15 at this same stage of the
race but came out of the spin by
building a quick 34-game lead.
They blew that, too. before taking
over for good in July.
They've lost behind their best
pitchers in this present skid, with
Lew Ruidclte dropping two, Bob
