THE ONLY original Bohemian settler who still lives in Malm
is William Halousek, right, seated. Joe Smidl, center, first
ditchrider, died after plans for observance of the 50th an
niversary of the founding of Malin were begun. Left is Alois
Kalina, now of Portland, whose vision and community spirit
guided continuing growth and development of the com
munity. He was mayor for 25 years. He donated six blocks
of the land he bought from the W. C. Dalton holdings to
be used for the schools, a jail and the Malin Community
Presbyterian Church. As the years passed he spent both
money and time for additional improvements to the town.

courting disaster, according to an
Ohio soil expert.
T. R. Smith, soil technician with
the Ohio Division of Lands and
Soil, said flood plains are formed
by sediments deposited by a
stream that has overflowed. The
presence of sediment indicates
that the stream will flood in the
future, he said.
"W hen considering building
near a stream," Smith advised,
"be sure that the site is high
enough to be above the flood
stage of, the stream. Usually the
type of soil present is a key to
whether flooding takes place.
"If in doubt about a site that
may be endangered by floods, seek
advice from those with a knowl
edge of soils.
