MRS! TERESA MeCOMB. who will b 86 on August 1 1 . has
contributed much to the library sine she came to Malin.
The foundation for her work and interest in books and young
people was laid during the years she taught in public schools.
Each of her family was a charter member of the Malin Pres
byterian Church. Mrs. McComb has served on the Malin
School Board, she was postmaster for several years, has been
member of the chamber of commerce, has reported Malin
news for the Klamath Falls Herald and News and other
papers. Her hobby is writing. The fluffy yellow cat is named
Beautiful.
Branch Library In Malin
Was Established In 1925
Women assumed responsibility
for bringing good reading to the
youth and adults of Malin with
the help of the Klamath County
Library, which established a
branch in Malio as early as 1923.
First librarians were Mrs. Joe K
tera and Mrs. Edith Rigor
For several years volunteers kept
the library open a few hours a
week without pay. Space for booki
in various buildings was given
without rent.
Later a library club was formed
and Mrs. Teresa McComb. a 1916
homestead arrival with her hus
band, John, became librarian and
received the first wage, supplied
hv the Infant chamber of com
merce, the city council and the
Helping Hand Society. women'

Her pay was K cents per day
for two hours, one of two days
the library1 was kept open each
week. The second day's work was
donated for the good of the com
munity. Schools of Malin wer
also served by the county librar
ian, then Mary McComb. Students
checked books for claw credits
Mrs. McComb divided the 95 cents
with the students.
She started the first library

ing room during the 15 yean she
was librarian. The Malin branch.
later closed for several years, was
then served by the Oregon State
Library by mall and the Klam
ath County Bookmobile.
More recently, books have been
distributed from the new Malin
Park Hall with Mrs. Francis Kol
kow as librarian. The comfortable
well furnished library room is open
four noun a day on Tuesday and
Saturday.

When Pa Was Courting Ma
. . . and the Malin community was being founded, the old
Central School occupied the ground where Whytal's and the
Medical-Dental building now stand. Later, after the school
was razed, the Oregon Bank built a modern building on the
location and 20 years ago this building became the home of
Whytal's . . . Klamath Falls' locally owned and operated fash
ion center . . . distinctive merchandise of known standard in
the fashion markets of the world, yef costing no more. Gone
are the days of the boned dresses, the bustles and pantaloons
and in their places are the modern styles of today. For the
past 20 years Klomoth women have known: "For distinctive
apparel, it's Whytol's, 9th and Main."
