Extension Of Korea Taxes

gress levied during the Korean
war on corporations, cigarettes
liquor,, beer, wine and automo
biles. President Eisenhower has rec
ommended a one-year extension to
avoid loss of about two billion
dollars annually in revenue which
otherwise would take effect July 1.
Key Democrats believed th-
administration would not oppose a
two-year extension. At Eisenhow
er's request. Congress has been
continuing the levies on a year-to-year
basis ever since the Ko
rean war.

WASHINGTON (AP) - More
extensive leasing of Indian lands
lor underground storage of oil and
gas would be permitted under new
regulations proposed Sunday by
Ihe Interior Department.
The proposal, covering both tri
bally and individually owned lands
which are in federal trust or re
stricted status, would permit such
leasing of lands which are under
oil and gas production leases as
well as of those which are not.
Under present regulations leasing
for storage has been limited to
lands not under production lease.
Rentals or storage fees to be
paid the Indian owners would be
established in each individual case
at a rate considered adequate.
The new regulations are to im
plement a law enacted Aug. 1,
1958.
Interested persons may submit
comments to the Indian Commis
sioner here within 30 days after
the proposal is published in the
federal register.
The storage would be in exhaust
ed gas and oil fields which have
been proven capable of acting as
storage areas without too great a
loss due to leakage.

must decide soon whether to push
for more than a one-year exten
sion. The extension legislation
must be enacted by midnight

The House Ways and Means
Committee, which initiates all tax
legislation, is expected to approve
an extension bill within the next
week or two and speed it through
the House.
A decision to push for more than
a one-year extension would run
into sharp opposition from the au
tomobile industry, which wants
Congress to allow the temporary
10 per cent excise tax on auto
mobiles to drop back to the per
manent seven per cent rate.
But the industry was unable to
swing much weight last year in
halting another extension of the
temporary tax, even though it
was sulfering from a drop in sales
which had resulted in heavy lay
offs of workers.
Extension of the temporary
sales would keep the tax on cor
poration income at 52 per cent,
instead of allowing it to drop back
to the permanent 47 per cen'
ate.

Worker Apathy
LOS ANGELES (AP) An in
dustrial relations expert says most
workers are "not dissatisfied, only
disinterested, in their unions.
Members rarely want to partici
pate in union affairs, Dr. Irving
Bernstein told a House Labor sub
committee Friday. Bernstein is as
sociate director of the UCLA In
stitute for Industrial Relations.
But apathy is not unusual In
American life, he added, and cited
meager participation in local elec
tions to prove his point.
The subcommittee ended a two
day hearing on labor reform legislation.
Train Kills
Two-Year-Old
WRENSHALL, Minn. (AP) A
mother racing to save her 2-year-
old daughter from a train got
within 15 feet of the child Sunday
night before the engine hit the
little girl and killed her.
Jan Newsum. playing with her
sand pail by the tracks near her
home, heard her mother scream.
"Jan. Jan!"
Jan was starting to get to her
feet when the passenger train,
traveling at about 60 miles per
hour, struck her.
The accident occurred seconds
after Mrs. Julius Newsum got
into a friend's aulo to drive to a
neighbor's home. Newsum, cutting
the lawn, remained home with
Jan and a year-old child.
From the auto window, Mrs.
Newsum saw Jan sitting along the
tracks 125 feet from the house.
She leaped from the car and ran
toward the girl. She fell once, got
up and resumed running. She kept
calling to her daughter.
The engineer, Carl Ostlund, Du
luth, Minn., said he had seen
something on the ties ahead of
the Northern Pacific train. He
applied the brakes, but the train
which doesn't stop in Wrenshall,
was going too last.

Nancy Gottfredson of South
Pasadena said her attacker raped
her. forced her to pose in the
nude while he took photographs
and threatened her life before re
leasing her in nearby Alhambra.
A suspect, Robert A. Smith. 32,
an ex-convict who served prison
terms both for robbery and rape,
was arrested 15 minutes alter the
girl's release.
Sheriff's deputies said Smith
surrendered meekly and admitted
the rape-kidnaping.
Miss Gottfredson was sitting in
the car at a lovers' lane with a
20-year-old Marine when a man
came to the car about 1 a.m. car
rying a .22-caliber rifle.
The man ordered both Miss
Gottfredson and the Marine, John
C. L'lrk-h, out of the car. They
hesitated and he shoved the gun's
muzzle in a window.
"When we saw the gun we were
even more scared, so we got
out." said Ulrich.
The attacker forced Miss Gott
fredson to bind Ulrich's hands and
feet with adhesive tape and then
taped her hands behind her back.
He also took $1 from Ulrich and
(3 from the girl.
The young Marine freed himself
from his loosely-tied bonds in a
.short time and managed to chase
(he fleeing kidnaper lor several
minutes before losing sight of the
car.
Miss Gottfredson wasn't seen
until eight hours later when two
off duty deputies spotted her wan
dering in the street and took her
to tha sheriff's substation here.
Disheveled and tearful, tha
frightened girl fell into the arms
of her anxious parents.

years ago most moonshiners
made well-aged, smooth-tasting
corn whisky and generally resort
ed to a shotgun when "revenoo
ers" visited tfiem.
Today, he said, moonshine is a
foul, burning potion and most
present day moonshiners call a
lawyer rather than shoot it out
with revenue agents.

Carl Elam, in court on charges
that his pekincse dogs were dis
turbing neighbors, offered to let
one of them bark in court to
prove the bark wasn't loud
enough to disturb anyone.
The judge said no. but dis
missed a charge of violating the
city's antinoise ordinance.
